Last week, I zoomed into an actual Moonlight School in Morehead, Kentucky, and met a class full of students who were learning all about their local heroine, the remarkable Cora Wilson Stewart.
These amazing teachers had planned for this field trip and prepared their students so well. Lots of great questions! The whole thing was a highlight for me. It was an incredible feeling to be in an actual one-room schoolhouse where those life-changing night schools had been held for illiterate adults in Rowan County.

Less than a month until A Season on the Wind hits the bookshelves!
It’s a story about a rare bird that lands on an Amish farm during the Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. Its appearance turns life upside down in Stoney Ridge, especially for Penny Weaver (farm host), her brother Micah (aka field guide), and author Ben Zook, who has made a career out of chasing rare birds around the world. Penny remembers Ben from long ago and always hoped he’d return to Stoney Ridge…and return to her…but he has absolutely no memory of her.
So what happens next?

As a child, the first book I remember being read to by my mom was Hitty: My First Hundred Years by Rachel Field. Written in 1929, it’s a story about a wooden doll, carved by a peddler, and her long and adventurous life. In 1930, the book received a Newbery Medal.
Hitty recounts her life in memoir-style: loved by multiple owners, narrowly escaping many hazardous experiences. Phoebe Preble, the daughter of a whaling captain, was Hitty’s first mistress and my favorite one of all. Maybe…because Phoebe lived in Maine and took the doll along on her father’s whaling voyage.

The other day, I was typing away when the house phone rang. Normally, I ignore the house phone. They’re usually just annoying robo spam calls.
But not this time!
It was ACFW, calling with the news that On A Coastal Breeze was a finalist for a 2021 Carol Award! I was sworn to secrecy until the news was announced the next night. So classy of ACFW…to make the time and effort for a personal phone call of congratulations.
It’s such an honor to be a finalist. On a Coastal Breeze was entered in a very competitive genre (Contemporary)…lots of stiff competition. Stay tuned for the final ..read more
