Hi friends! I’ve missed you! Apologies for being away from the blogosphere for ages, but if you’ve kept up with Garden Delights via Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, you’ll know that it was a busy year: I wrote a BOOK! You can find it here! (I’ve enjoyed teasing my kids: “Want me to proofread your paper? I’m a PUBLISHED AUTHOR, you know!”) Here's a sneak peak of the book. I built a brand new, dream KITCHEN GARDEN! (OK. Peter helped, too.) I’ve been promoting the BOOK on lots of podcasts, in magazine interviews, and online. (Marketing is much more work than the actual writing, to be honest ..read more

How to Save Tomato Seeds.
Garden Delights

Ah, fall. While most gardeners turn their attention to arranging pumpkins on porches and planting brassicas, I’m busy obsessing over tomatoes. Tomato seeds, that is. This summer, the garden produced a bounty of deliciousness. Thai Pink Egg, my husband’s favorite, filled four bowls on the counter one week. Pineapple, with its gorgeous pink interior and golden, striped flesh, created some of the prettiest caprese salad we’ve eaten. Adorable purple Bumblebee cherries added interesting color to bruschetta. The rainbow of tomatoes, in all shapes, sizes, and colors, always amazes me. It makes me ..read more

Creative Companion Planting: 5 Garden Benefits.
Garden Delights

Ah, the first batch of bruschetta from the garden will soon be ready. Is there anything better than the taste of garden-fresh heirloom tomatoes topped with sweet, fragrant basil? Of course, tomatoes and basil taste delicious together--but did you know that they grow well together, too? Companion planting--the art of combining different species of plants to benefit one another in the garden--is a long-practiced organic gardening technique. Have you heard of a “Three Sisters” garden? Historically, Native Americans grew food for a balanced diet in a single plot of land. By planting corn, beans ..read more

Wow. What a wild and crazy year. My overwhelmed brain tries to make sense of what’s happening to our country, reading the news, waiting for the latest bomb to drop. I’ll admit—it’s exhausting. But thank goodness for gardens—and gardening friends--that save my sanity during crazy political and emotional times! Right now, more than ever, it’s important to cherish our gardens. From starting seeds in a greenhouse to working in community gardens to dividing perennials to share with friends and neighbors, gardening provides the perfect opportunity to bring people together. That’s what we need to ..read more

Growing Pumpkins: A New Tradition.

There’s something a bit magical about pumpkins. From fairy tales read to us as children to fall photo ops with kids to the ever-endearing tradition of carving jack-o’-lanterns pre-Halloween, pumpkins may be one of the most coveted crops for fall finery. We see them everywhere: gorgeous, heirloom varieties gracing the dining room buffet; squat, white pumpkins, adorned with succulents and moss; traditional, Clemson-orange orbs, carved into funny or frightening faces. Pumpkins represent fall fun as much as football games, apple picking, and leaf peeping. They’re the icon of autumn, fall’s logo ..read more

Hello. It’s me. OK, sorry for the rip off, Adele. I’ve missed you, my friends! I apologize for my absence, but for the past month, my poor blog has been broken. Literally. Thanks to the wonderful David from Ghost.org tech support who cured my ailing site, I’m finally back! Yay! While I spent an inordinate amount of time stressing over my lack of technical prowess, I’ve also been quite busy. There’s so much to share with you. When we last chatted, I told you about my quest to grow all the plants for a beautiful edible garden from seed, tubers, or cuttings—and I do mean, ALL. The project cons ..read more

Floral Friday: Happy Earth Day!
Garden Delights
by Julie Thompson-Adolf

Happy Earth Day, friends! How did you celebrate? We spent last night creating a float for Mikey's 5th grade Earth Day parade--a project I found a tad counterintuitive to the premise of Earth Day. After all, plastering a Radio Flyer wagon with paper grass and cut-out leaves, as well as creating a science-fair type tri-fold board about the benefits of planting trees just seemed a bit...absurd. Shouldn't Earth Day projects involve planting seeds or trees instead of wasting resources for a 15 minute parade? I think it's time for summer vacation. Still, I love Earth Day, and his float did include t ..read more

It’s finally here…spring! Hooray! We’ve all anxiously awaited the arrival of warmer days, heralding the beginning of gardening season. However, with the arrival of spring, freezing temperatures also appeared in Upstate SC. What a crazy week—with 90 degree temperatures last week, many local gardeners began planting annuals and tender vegetables, only to face frost this morning. As tempting as it is, I never plant annuals outside before our last expected frost date, which is typically near the end of April. Who wants to plant a garden twice? And I definitely don’t want to endangered all the gree ..read more

The Great Seed Experiment continues. The greenhouse is filled with beautiful babies. Many desperately need new homes, looking like a 6-year-old forced to sleep in a crib, while I keep adding to my seed addiction. A dozen packets of assorted nasturtium beauties arrived yesterday, sending me into a giddy floral daydream. I must grow ALL THE NASTURTIUMS this year. Then, I stupidly ventured onto Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds' website last night, looking up blearily after two hours of browsing stunning vegetables that we NEED. (Does anyone in my family like Turkish eggplant? Do I care? It's pretty ..read more

One of the good things about Kristen’s horseback riding obsession is the time I spend waiting for her at the barn. I know that might sound odd, and without a laptop—I would curse the five hours of enforced confinement. But today, sitting in a rocking chair with the sun beginning to fade behind the mountains in North Carolina, chickens scratching on the hill, daffodils swaying in the breeze, it’s near perfection. Spring is coming, finally. The warm-sweet scent fills the air. I spent four hours in the greenhouse today, sowing more seeds. The greenhouse shelves soon will be full, and I’m not se ..read more
