On September 23, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada made it mandatory to submit most types of permanent residence applications, including spousal sponsorship applications, online. Prior to that date, spousal sponsorship applications could be submitted by mail. For applicants in the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada class (SCLPC), an application for an open work permit could be included in the same envelope as the sponsorship application and would be processed when the sponsorship application was accepted for processing. Long time, no blog! A lot has happened since my last post in 2019. I gave birth to my second baby girl in January 2020 and was settling into a cozy maternity leave when the Covid-19 pandemic began. It turned out to be a good time to be absent from practising immigration law (so much immigration chaos caused by the pandemic) and from working in general (shout-out to all the parents who had to work with no childcare during Covid-19 lockdowns). In December 2018, the Canadian government made changes to Canada's impaired driving laws which have important implications for foreign nationals and Canadian permanent residents.   On July 31, 2018, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will begin to expand its biometrics program to include most visa applicants. Previously, only applicants from certain countries believed to pose a higher risk of immigration fraud were required to provide biometrics.  By the end of the month, biometrics will be required from all applicants from Europe, Africa and the Middle East and by the end of 2018, applicants from Asia, Asia Pacific and the Americas will be required to provide biometrics.
