After a three-year hiatus due to Hong Kong’s incredibly strict regulations, the host of Bring a Special Bottle Night finally made his triumphant return to the city. A group of 17 friends found themselves yet again at Crown Wine Cellars for the 14th BASBN. The rules of the evening of simple: Bring either two bottles or a magnum of something exceptional in your cellar and see if it’s a winner. All wines are served single blind, meaning the guests know what is in the flight, but need to figure out which is which.

In 2011 Domaine Clarence Dillon, proprietors of Ch Haut Brion and Ch La Mission Haut Brion, undertook an exciting new project beyond their home roots of Pessac-Léognan. Venturing the other side of the Gironde, they bought the historically acclaimed St Emilion Classified growth Ch Tertre Daugay, 16 hectares of prime vineyard on the limestone plateau.
Led by family chairman Prince Robert of Luxembourg and his wine management team, run by the brilliant Jean-Philippe Delmas, they have set about a wholesale restructuring of the estate and creation of a totally new brand. First came the new name Ch ..read more

After a two-year hiatus, a Goedhuis team from buying and sales are all absolutely delighted to be back at the Bordeaux Union de Grands Crus En Primeur tastings, focusing this year on the 2021 vintage.
Monday started early with an 8am pick up by one of our favourite negociants who was kindly chaperoning us for two days. First stop, Margaux, where we headed to Ch Brane Cantenac.
Our biggest concern going into this campaign was whether the wines would be showing well at this early stage, but our first visit proved we had nothing to worry about. Brane have made two beautiful 2021s that are elegan ..read more

Our Buyer and MW David Roberts has just returned from Bordeaux, where he spent 3 days visiting some of main negociants and tasting a few 2021s in advance of their official showing next week at the Union des Grands Crus En Primeur tastings. Here he tells us what we can expect from the upcoming 2021 En Primeur campaign:
2021 was a year which tested the skills of Bordeaux’s best. April frosts, wet early summer months of May and June and a nail-biting late harvest the end of September and early October meant this was, as Jean-Sebastien Philippe at Ch Lafite-Rothschild described, “a vintage of deci ..read more

“The 2018 Barolos I tasted for this year’s preview left me elated, energised and excited. With the colour of crushed rubies, the wines are extremely elegant, perfumed and charged with super-fine tannins. Their transparency accentuates in a clear-cut way the distinction between crus and villages and makes these wines almost ephemeral – Barolo like you have never seen before”. Walter Speller
2018 is a classic Barolo vintage which has allowed individual expression to shine. We are delighted to have kicked off our 2018 vintage campaign with the stunning collection from Elio Grasso; cli ..read more

The 2017 Brunellos are about to launch onto the market, and they offer some tremendous opportunities, for both mid-term cellaring and early drinking. However, some caution is required. It is a year where the skills of the growers were tested to the full and therefore it is important to focus and be selective. But scratch beneath the surface, take our advice and thos ..read more

2022 represents the 40th anniversary of the “Southwold Tasting”, taking its name after the small fishing village in Suffolk where it was first hosted by the former Adnams chairman Simon Loftus at his home in Southwold back in 1982.
The concept is simple: a group of 18 wine importers and journalists (this year including no less than nine Masters of Wine) gather to review the Bordeaux vintage two years after the wines have been bottled. They taste the wines blind and give an independent view on them and the vintage. This year, it was the turn of the 2018 vintage to be assessed. 250 wines ..read more

It was the last day of tastings, so just a couple of visits. First stop was in Nuits St. Georges at Domaine Legros. I was looking forward to this tasting as I have never been there, and it is relatively new to us. These are lovely wines, the village Nuits St. Georges was very well made, lovely and pure, with good concentration, but the star wine in the line-up was their Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Millandes. This was very pretty and delicate, with beautiful balance and fabulous texture. There were also some lovely 1ers Crus Nuits St. Georges.
Last visit of the week was in Marsannay at Domaine Aud ..read more

The next day we headed up to Morey St. Denis. Our first appointment was at Domaine Ponsot. The winery is situated at the top of the village, it was beautiful sunny morning and in the distance you could see Mont Blanc. Alexandre took us into the cellars and we tasted two fabulous whites, their St. Romain which was excellent and their gorgeous Morey St. Denis 1er Mont Luisant. All the wines were showing incredibly well, hugely expressive of the vineyards and wonderful balance. The Clos Vougeot was gorgeous, lovely textured and very broad. The Clos de Roche was sublime, hugely intense with some s ..read more
