I’m about to embark on an adventure. Sometime before the end of February my wife will give birth to our first child. We will be moving house before the end of 2020, and we will be looking to embrace the new lifestyle that these massive changes are going to bring. I think this is what they call a big year! Such times of change are opportunities to take stock and evaluate priorities and so we have this post here, today. If the title didn’t give things away, I’ve decided it is the perfect time to wind down Creaking Shelves. And rather than just petering out and going silent I wanted to put togeth ..read more

Shattered Aeons Review
Creaking Shelves | Board Game Shenanigans

It has been an aeon since we started reviewing the Forgotten Age cycle, and I certainly feel shattered, so Shattered Aeons seems an entirely appropriate place to end. And what an end. After an incalculably long descent you have reached the Nexus. All the threads are at last bound together. Depending on your choices and aptitude thus far you may be well on your way to putting everything together… or this might be quite the intense series of revelations! Bringing the orb and nexus together sets off an orgy of chaotic energy, breaking a rift in time open. You step through into a wild tour of the ..read more

GridCon Review

I spent last weekend nestled in the picturesque town of Tiverton, Devon, or at least I am told it is. I didn’t get out of the hotel to see it… because I was at a games convention! GridCon is the brand new gaming convention courtesy of Paul Grogan of Gaming Rules! (Gaming Rules in Devon con… GridCon… see?) Not to be confused with Paul Harris who runs Handy Con. In the UK it is the law that only people named Paul can run conventions.  As I have done in the past when attending a new convention, I thought I would provide a little write up of the event. Note: I’ve done quite a few media things ..read more

The Taverns of Tiefenthal Review
Creaking Shelves | Board Game Shenanigans

The challenge after releasing a hugely successful game like Quacks of Quedlinburg is how to come up with a game title that is even harder to pronounce? But in Taverns of Tiefenthal, I think Wolfgang Warsch nailed it. Players: 2-4 Time: 60 mins Designer: Wolfgang Warsch Artist: Dennis Lohausen Publisher: Schmidt Spiele The sequel. The second album. Always tough things to get right and board games are no exception. There is excitement, expectations, and expletives if it all goes wrong. Quacks was a light game. Taverns of Tiefenthal ups the complexity, and completely changes the mechanics, but r ..read more

Depths of Yoth Review

You barely survived The City of Archives with your identity intact and now you awake, not in your comfortable bed, but halfway up an unfathomably tall staircase deep within the Earth. An ancient place. A place humanity has wisely left well alone. For here, in The Depths of Yoth, a long forgotten power still resides.  But you will have to go quite a bit deeper yet. Unfortunately for you, the locals are non-too pleased with a couple of tourists bumbling about their sacred sites and loudly discussing their experiences with the local cuisine. Indeed, they’ll be chasing you down! The brand ne ..read more

Interview: Sophie Williams of Needy Cat Games

It’s a rare treat to be able to talk to a creator about their work – to hear the story straight from the source, without the filters of second hand knowledge and other people’s opinions, like the world’s longest game of Chinese Whispers. The terrific thing about board game designers is how willing they are to discuss what they do – because it’s not just a job for them, it’s a passion. The lovely folks at the UK’s Needy Cat Games are particularly passionate and open to chat (if you don’t believe me, just watch them shoot the breeze about their Hellboy: The Board Game with Robin), and lead desig ..read more

Men At Work Review

Young man! There’s no need to feel down. I said, young man! Hook those men off the ground. I said, young man! If you want a new game, there’s no need to be unhappy. It’s fun to play a game of Men at Work! Players: 2-5 Time: 30-45 mins Designer: Rita Modl Artist: Bernard Bittler, Chris Quilliams Publisher: Pegasus Spiele, Pretzel Games Men at Work is the game that reminded me just how fun dexterity games can be. I had gotten it into my head that once you’ve played one stacking game, you’ve pretty much played them all. Jenga, bar a few tweaks to add an actual winner, pretty much had t ..read more
