Walking Backwards in Life

(from my just published book, Just One Step: Walking Backwards to the Present on the Camino Trail) It’s fairly easily to understand what it means to walk backwards on the downhills of the Camino but understanding the ways to implement walking backwards in your day-to-day living and leading can be more challenging. Shortly after I returned from my Camino journey, a good friend of mine called me and asked if I could stop by that evening for a chat. I agreed, and he quickly shared with me that he had a very real challenge with his romantic relationship. He was heading out of town for a trip and r ..read more

Emotional Awareness

Emotional intelligence has become the buzz word and cliché of the last decade. Everyone’s talking about the importance of emotional intelligence (especially in leadership), but I rarely see people actually working on it or understanding it. At the risk of adding a whole new concept to the conversation – but why not – I suggest we instead focus on emotional awareness. Here’s how I define emotional awareness: A person’s ability and willingness to be aware of their emotions, the underlying sources of those emotions, the behaviors that flow from those emotions and the impact they create through t ..read more

Make Stories Together

We all have stories that define us (so far) and which form the basis for our perspectives, personally and professionally. Too often, organizations and leaders tell us or want us to leave our stories at the door, but that’s naïve. Those stories (our own stories) are a fundamental part of the perceptions we bring to every job, interaction and relationship. However, what matters more than the stories we bring to a team or organization are the stories we can make together as team members. What’s so often missed is the ways that teams create stories together – either by design and on purpose or ..read more

Experiences Matter

As many of you know, I love Broadway shows and my favorite is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s innovative smash hit Hamilton. One of the songs in that show is titled Yorktown: The World Turned Upside Down, which refers to the unimaginable outcome of the colonies winning the Revolutionary War. Well, we’re all facing an almost unimaginable situation today with the coronavirus pandemic, and our world has been turned upside down. And we’re navigating it well despite all the challenges. If I had told you six months ago that the following would all happen over a two week period, what would you have thought ..read more

Precedent Setting Perceptions
Jeff Nischwitz

Here’s a phrase that you often hear from leaders: “We have to be careful about setting precedents.” Interestingly, these comments are nearly always directed at what the leader perceives as “negative” precedents. Most recently, I’ve heard this phrase several times as companies are discussing whether they’re going to allow employees to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic. Some leaders are concerned that if their employees work from home during the pandemic, they’ll want to work from home after things have stabilized. The leadership gap I want to highlight today is that we too often fo ..read more

Why Walk Backwards

(from my soon-to-be-published book, Just One Step: Walking Backwards to the Present on the Camino Trail) Before I dive into the various practical ways that walking backwards will serve you, let’s first look at some obvious benefits of this shift. As noted above, walking backwards is one antidote for the insanity that many of us engage in every day – doing the same things over and over and hoping for different outcomes. As for me, hope isn’t a strategy, and it’s not something I want to pin my future on. While I believe in hope (the belief that things can and will change), I choose not to ..read more

Just Walk Backwards

(from my soon-to-be-published book, Just One Step: Walking Backwards to the Present on the Camino Trail) I’m a huge fan of Seinfeld – the show about nothing – and I’m convinced that everything you need to know about life, relationships and leadership can be found there. However, you may have to look at things differently in order to find what you should do amidst the many examples in Seinfeld of what NOT to do. One particularly memorable episode is called “The Opposite” and involves George’s decision to do the exact opposite of what he would normally do. George takes his first step into the ..read more

Look Back

(from my soon-to-be-published book, Just One Step: Walking Backwards to the Present on the Camino Trail) One unexpected Camino gift and lesson was the importance of periodically looking back along your journey. While it’s easy to keep your eyes focused on what’s ahead of you, I found great gifts and perspectives in occasionally turning around to look back on the Camino (and now in my life’s journey). I remember one particular moment early on the Camino where I turned around and experienced a completely different perspective (a different view), and this led me to continue this practice throu ..read more

Momentum Is Real

from my soon-to-be-published book, Just One Step: Walking Backwards to the Present on the Camino Trail I’ve often thought about the importance of momentum, but it was only on the Camino that I really came to understand it – how to create it, and the various impacts and gifts that momentum delivers. Whether you’re embarking on a Camino or a different journey, any pursuit of an objective requires momentum to help you achieve your desired outcomes. Let’s first look at some of these vital outcomes that momentum delivers, which I experienced the truth of on the Camino. One of the biggest gif ..read more
