10 Ways to Engage Bible Students the Minute They Walk In the Door

One of the little tricks professional educators use is to engage students the minute they walk in the classroom door. There are two reasons for this. First, it allows them to take advantage of every possible minute for learning. The second is that it is much easier to start class when the students are already engaged in an activity than when they have been allowed to run free for several minutes. The room is already more or less quiet and the students are ready to learn – because they have already started. Not sure how to engage students in an activity while you are busy greeting the students ..read more

Great Family Activity to Encourage Families ToDo Easter Eve

I am reposting this annual family favorite to give you time to gather the ingredients together before Easter weekend. Feel free to copy and share with the families served by your ministry or church! Resurrection Cookies are a great way to review the story of Jesus’ death with your children. I got the recipe from one of my neighbors years ago and suspect it is one of those that has been passed around all over the country. I would love to credit the creator, but have no idea who that would be. We did this every year the Saturday night before Easter as one of our family traditions when our daugh ..read more

Questions to Encourage Bible Students to Reflect on Their Spiritual Growth

Self reflection is an important tool for spiritual growth. We need to understand where we are in comparison to where God wants us to be. Childhood and the teen years are so crammed with activities and entertainment designed to distract one from thinking, that reflection has become a lost art. No wonder young people often struggle to grow spiritually! There are some questions you can ask your Bible class students or mentees to encourage them to reflect on where they are spiritually and where God wants them to be. Hopefully, this realization will encourage them to do the things necessary to gro ..read more

Is Your Spiritual Baggage Harming Your Ministry?

One of the most common mistakes I see in ministry – especially to children and teens – is when an adult brings their past spiritual baggage into a lesson or conversation with a young person. Please understand. I am not trying to minimize what happened to you in any way. What I am saying is that too many adults are projecting their personal spiritual baggage onto young people who have never and hopefully will never experience what happened to you. They pick up your negative attitudes toward the church, Christians and God – even if that is not your intent. I firmly believe too many young people ..read more

Helping Young Bible Students Understand the Roman Military

Recently, I heard a lecture for adults on the Roman military. The speaker gave a lot of information that was new to me, but also gave me a better understanding of some of the people in the Bible and what their lives may have been like. While your students wouldn’t be interested in some of the minutia, some of the broader information can enhance their understanding of scripture. If your church is near a military base or you have students who are interested in soldiers and battles, the information is also a great way to get them curious about scripture. To make it a bit easier for you, I’m bull ..read more

The Hidden Benefit of Repetition in Bible Classes for Kids and Teens

At Teach One Reach One Ministries we talk a lot about the value of scripture memorization as well as ways to move God’s commands and principles to the long term memories of your students. Repetition plays an important part in reaching both of those goals – especially spaced repetition and review. But there’s another somewhat hidden benefit to exposing Bible students to everything in scripture as many times as possible (along with its meaning and application of course). It’s called the mere-exposure effect or the familiarity principle. Researchers have found that repeated exposure to something ..read more

A Bible Class Activity That Builds Community

One of the many benefits God built into His church is community. A spiritual family with all of the quirky characters of any real family, but a family that is supposed to love, support and hold you accountable the way Jesus might. That kind of community doesn’t just happen because everyone shows up to the church building for a couple of hours every Sunday. It’s built by spending time together and really getting to know each other’s hearts. Your Bible students face a lot of pressure at school and during their other activities to make choices that aren’t pleasing to God. Living counter cultural ..read more

12 Ways You May Unwittingly Be Encouraging Rebellion In Your Bible Students

As a Bible teacher I would imagine one of your goals is to encourage your students to obey God. Yet, you may unwittingly be encouraging them to rebel against God’s commands by your comments and attitudes. While every situation is different, there are 12 things many Bible teachers do on a regular basis that may encourage their students to disobey God. Quoting rule breaking/rebellious platitudes like “Rules were made to be broken”, “You do you” and others. You may not mean they should disobey God, but encouraging a rebellious spirit can in turn encourage rebellion against God and His commands ..read more

Planning a Museum Field Trip for Bible Classes

Field trips are a great change of pace for Bible class students. You may think a visit to your local museum doesn’t make sense because it isn’t a Bible museum and doesn’t have any exhibits labeled “Bible”. The truth is that many museums have exhibits from the time periods and cultures covered in the Bible – or at least some of them. These exhibits often contain artifacts that will help your Bible students better understand and remember what they are learning in Bible class. The experience can also help underscore the historicity of much of the Bible as often these exhibits contain items repres ..read more

Handling Student Answers So Every Bible Student Can Learn

Asking your Bible students questions is a critical part of an impactful Bible class for children and teens. While the types of questions you ask is important for assessing student learning and encouraging them to think more deeply about important topics, how you respond to their answers is also critical. Unfortunately, if student responses are handled poorly, it can create a dynamic that causes your students to shut down emotionally and mentally or even cause them to want to avoid attending your class entirely. A study found that when incorrect answers are met with a frustrated attitude from ..read more
