It might sound like the latest mad-cap plot from Dr Evil, but this prototype Drone research is experimenting with ways to improve the quantity and quality of our forests - not just in the UK, but around the world…. Aberystwyth University is currently experimenting with drone mounted high definition laser systems to measure timber volumes, forest biomass and the carbon content of British forests. Should children be banned from flying large drones unsupervised? That’s the question being posed by the Department of Transport (DfT) as it considers the safety implications of youngsters flying drones over 250g. The DfT’s proposal is that children could fly a heavier drone only under the supervision of an adult who owns and has registered it. Drones are amazing machines which are being put to increasingly imaginative uses as the technology matures. In the hands of an experienced and CAA approved pilot, they are also very safe. However one area where safety could be improved is looking how to reduce the risk of injury from the exposed propellers. The BBC has run a couple of reports recently on how the UK heatwave we’re all enjoying this summer has had a dramatic effect on the great british landscape. A recent article compared two NASA satellite images – one from May, the other from mid-July. You may not immediately connect Network Rail with aircraft or aviation, however this public sector body has an Air Operations team which uses helicopters - and increasingly Drones - to help maintain its 20,000 miles of track, 32,000 bridges and 2,500 stations.
