San Francisco indie-pop darlings French Cassettes have been transforming stages into musical dreamscapes throughout their Fall 2023 tour across the US. Stepping into the spotlight at Metro Baltimore, excited shouts erupted from the crowd below. Just their second stop on tour, the energy was high, offering the band a warm welcome to the East Coast.
Dramatic red lights on each of the four band members elevated the ambiance alongside beautifully nostalgic and retro sounds of hit songs like “Utah” and “Santa Cruz Tomorrow.” Lead singer Scott Huerta’s velvety vocals soared effortlessly, infusing e ..read more

HELLMODE is out now on Polyvinyl Records
Jeff Rosenstock is a man who has always worn his heart on his sleeve, spilling his guts out in his live shows as much as he does in his writing. He has long been considered one of the paragons of DIY for the last decade or so, whether it’s in fighting for better merch cuts from venues or in consistently being his own roadie, appearing on stage to set up and set down before and after his show, even at 930 Club.

MMJ’s new live album is out on ATO Records
For over 20 years, My Morning Jacket has been one of the most relentless rock bands touring the country, and even for those just jumping on board now, it’s not hard to see why. Their blend of Americana, rock, and jam came at the perfect time in the early 2000s, as American festivals were truly ramping up and heavily courting bands melding those soundscapes.

It’s been a while since a traveling ‘festival’ made waves. Warped Tour was a cultural monolith that is still remembered fondly today. AEG might be angling to fill that void with Re:SET, a nationwide touring concert series. Here’s how it works: throughout each weekend in June, AEG chose three geographically close metro areas to host three sets of artists on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Merriweather Post Pavilion hosted indie rock supergroup Boygenius on Friday (along with Clairo, Dijon, and Bartees Strange), R&B wunderkind Steve Lacy on Saturday (with James Blake, Toro Y Moi, and Foushe ..read more

Slugs of Love is out now via Ninja Tune
Equal parts, ethereal and energetic, Little Dragon began carving out their unique niche in the Venn diagram of synth-pop and R&B in 2007. Along the way, singer Yukimi Nagano became a hot-ticket collaborator, contributing her serene vocals to tracks by Gorillaz, Big Boi, DJ Shadow, BADBADNOTGOOD, Mac Miller, Flume, De La Soul, and many more. They’ve done it all and traveled the world, and yet they continue to push their sound in new directions with their latest album, Slugs of Love.
Their previous album, New Me, Same Us, had unfortunate release timin ..read more

Wild analog electronic wizards, Sylvan Esso are at it again. Thanks to last year’s No Rules Sandy, Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn’s third show at The Anthem was their most fun yet. Their fourth album is the duo at their most improvisational and musically liberated, splicing chopped-up vocals and synths alongside acoustic guitars and field recordings. Meath’s soft, folk-driven vocals juxtaposed on top of Nick’s angular production make for a musical Venn diagram where they are the sole occupants.

The sounds of 1960s and 70s-era Turkey, distilled through synths, electric guitars, and of course, the saz, make for some great psych-rock music that’s become a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Who knew? What started as a Facebook ad in Amsterdam looking for Turkish musicians has turned into, Altin Gün, a globe-trotting unit that brings traditional Turkish folk and dance parties to the masses, including at a nearly sold-out Howard Theatre in DC.
