“I think this year people are somehow more desperate for help than they were last year and it’s hard to put my finger on it and say why, but there is definitely a stronger sense of urgency at this time of the year.” Kallenbach believes that the holiday season is a reflective time for many people and that the new year affords them an opportunity to improve their lives. It was a little over two years ago that I returned to live in Johannesburg after spending most of my adult life abroad — in New York, Berlin and London. I must be in the minority, as most people I encounter want to know “why” as they scamper to find an exit route from SA with either a foreign passport or relative who’ll give them access to one. I haven’t yet discovered a social group for those who’ve returned to live in the place of their birth (I imagine I’m not the only returnee) but one of the first things that struck me about returning to live here was how friendly South Africans are, what ..read more

Early last month (FEB) I registered with the Department of Health on their EVDS portal in advance of the Covid-19 vaccine arriving in South Africa. At the time, I had no idea which manufacturer would be acceptable to the South African authorities. However, just last week, a colleague alerted me to a new link for the J and J vaccine under the auspices of the Sisonke Protocol which is available to healthcare workers. Originally when I registered, my preference for having the vaccine was at the Rosebank Clinic in Johannesburg, a mere 10 minutes from where my consulting rooms are located. For the ..read more

On 23 February 2021, I was administered the J and J vaccine as part of the Sisonke project.  This took place at the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg. This is the third biggest hospital in South Africa. As a healthcare worker I was given the vaccine as part of South Africa’s first vaccination drive across the country.  According to the Minister of Health, Dr Swelini Mkhize, the number of health care workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol as of 6.00 pm on that same date was 32,315. We create our conflicts – and we can resolve them too Life is like a pressure cooker, but there are ways to relieve the stress, writes Michael Kallenbach Most relationships, whether with the person you live with, your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend, will have struggled in some way since last March when the first lockdown began. We’ve all had to take a few deep breaths every day, perhaps a few times a day — and sometimes we have to just clench our teeth and keep our thoughts to ourselves. “Everyone seems to know someone who is either ill at the moment, recovering from Covid-19 or has recently died. “No one wants to see a family member or friend die or get ill, so this is the cloud that’s hanging over all of us at the moment.” Kallenbach said that unlike any other event in recent history, no one is immune from the challenges brought on by the global health crisis.
