Since I started living in Hove, I have tried a few Reformer Pilates classes as there are so many Pilates studios in the Brighton area. It’s made me think about the similarities between Pilates Reformer classes and one to one yoga

Starting in 2024, I will be offering One to one private yoga classes in Hove, East Sussex on Thursdays. This in addition to my Hove workshops which are held on Sunday afternoons.
I teach one to one yoga to people who have never even been to a group yoga class. I also teach people on an ad hoc basis when their regular class stops for the summer. You may have issues that mean you would struggle to cope in a group class setting. Some students use a private yoga session to enhance their own home practice. Others know that without our sessions, they’d never actually do any ..read more

On Saturday, the 18th of March 2023 I am teaching my first workshop at a lovely new venue in Hove on western Road.

There are currently four spaces left for the workshop that starts at 4:15 pm and runs for two hours.

Over the 25 years that I’ve been teaching Iyengar Yoga, I have gradually come to realise that my personal preference is teaching bespoke Yoga sessions to meet people’s individual needs- it’s really very rewarding. So I have decided to write a blog post about the Benefits of Private One to One Yoga classes.
I have the higher level qualification (level 3) in the Iyengar Yoga system that is required to teach one to one Yoga classes. Not all Certified teachers have this, as it requires many years of additional study.

I’m still being asked whether there are any good online Yoga videos that I recommend.
I do feel that it’s still true that getting to Yoga class is the best way to learn – a well trained teacher can observe you, offer advice and suggestions. This could be in a group class or in individual tuition. Iyengar Yoga teachers are also trained how to perform physical adjustments if necessary.
However, due to Corona virus restrictions a good online yoga video can be really helpful. As modern life becomes busier and people have to travel more for work,
online yoga videos may be a w ..read more

I was looking on Pinterest for great pictures of chair yoga for back pain to share with my students. But I couldn’t find the method I was looking for. It’s one of the simplest, yet most effective ways to sit to help with a bad back. So here’s a photo of one of my students demonstrating it:
In Iyengar Yoga circles I’ve heard it called ‘Upavista Konasana on a chair’, but I just call it ‘sitting cowboy style’. The thighs need to be pressed back wide, away from the chair rails. If you’re lucky, this will fire up muscles around the hips. That area is ke ..read more

As I’m writing this post we in the UK are in lockdown due to Corona virus. Beforehand, I was teaching Iyengar Yoga to hundreds of people every year. Many of us are now self isolating.
Even if we are going out for essentials, most of us are now staying at home a lot more than we did.
I have found that organising my day to be helpful. This can be quite flexible, but a basic routine can really help maintain normality.
For stress and insomnia, making sure we always get up by a certain time, and go to bed by a certain time can help regulate the bodies hormonal and emotional sys ..read more

In the UK doctors are seeing more and more patients complaining about insomnia. Unfortunately, there is very little that modern medicine can do to help, except offer sleeping tablets, which only have a short term benefit and are highly addictive. Doctors may inquire as to lifestyle, such as how much caffeine a person consumes. There are also ‘sleep hygiene’ steps that can be taken, such as not having any screens in bedrooms. Many people adhere to such advice, and yet the insomnia does not improve. That is when Yoga can help, by addressing the underlying causes.
