Apologetic Anecdotes

Over years of doing apologetics, I have experienced some remarkable apologetics encounters. I offer the following six to encourage you to have fire in your bones, love in your heart, and knowledge in your mind to bring the whole Bible to the whole world for the glory of God, the good of his church, the extension of his Kingdom, and for peace and truth on earth.  In the spring of 1977, when I was in college, I wrote an apologetic letter to the editor of the University of Oregon newspaper. One of my professors, an embittered religious studies scholar, wrote a letter in response saying I did ..read more

An Old Christian Philosopher Spouts Off
Douglas Groothuis, Ph.D.

I am sixty-five years of age. To my knowledge, I have no life-threatening illness and I am in relatively good shape (but my aching back). Nevertheless, I have more years behind me than I have before me (at least in earthy time). So, I will spout off a bit about what matters most for time and eternity. I cannot be silent and you cannot shut me up (yet). This list is not exhaustive, of course, but it might be exhausting. If so, lean on Christ for strength.  Time is short. Eternity is long. Jesus Christ is the eternal God who entered our world to redeem erring creatures who were lost in the ..read more

American Dystopia: Unfreedom of Speech Today

I sported my George Orwell t-shirt recently for a bicycle ride. It reads, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” This quote is taken from Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984. It is sadly apropos today, since Americans live in an increasingly Orwellian world, especially concerning the freedom of speech. When one perspective controls discourse, it is free to define terms any way it wants and without the resistance provided by dissident voices. In one scene, Winston, the protagonist of 1984, is lectured by party propogandist-torturer, O’Brien about reality ..read more

Public Ministry and the Christian: Eight Principles
Douglas Groothuis, Ph.D.
by Douglas Groothuis

Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers (1 Timothy 4:16). By God’s grace, I converted to Christianity at age nineteen in 1976. The Lord led me to be a campus minister, an author, and then a professional philosopher. This ministry has been one of a public intellectual (if that doesn’t sound too pompous). That is, I’ve tried “to interpret the church for the world and the world for the church,” as Os Guinness put it concerning his ministry. Along these lines, I have been much occupied by doing apologetics and of ..read more

What Is Critical Race Theory?
Douglas Groothuis, Ph.D.
by Douglas Groothuis

Douglas Groothuis, Ph.D., taken from Fire in the Streets (Salem Books, 2022). The documentation is included in the book and Kindle version. In a nutshell, CRT developed from an earlier ideology called Critical Theory (CT), which was a form of neo-Marxism. Every aspect of society must be criticized and found wanting. Instead of dividing society into the two categories of the bourgeoise owners (the oppressors) and the proletariat workers (the oppressed), as in Marxism, CT taught that oppression is woven into the fabric of culture and must be exposed through cultural critique. Through this critiq ..read more

The Meaning of Book Endorsements
Douglas Groothuis, Ph.D.
by Douglas Groothuis

Why buy a particular book? We answer that partly by finding who wants us to buy the book. We check the endorsement, which are found in one or more places—front cover, back cover, and opening pages. Some authors do not need endorsements, since they are industries in their own right, such as Stephen King and J. K. Rowling. Lessor mortals court endorsements. But what should we make of this practice? What does it really mean? Book endorsements are both reviews and benedictions.  Generally speaking, the greater endorses the lesser. Thus, I was elated that my first book, Unm ..read more

THE NEED FOR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: Countering Ten Criticism
Douglas Groothuis, Ph.D.
by Douglas Groothuis

Many arguments are marshaled against Christian schools and Christian home-schooling. Those, such as myself, who categorically reject state (public) education as insufficiently Christian, inefficient, and inherently unfair are, in for some lively debates. The objections raised must be met. Objection #1. “If you send your children to Christian schools they’ll be in a sheltered, hot-house environment and will be isolated from the ‘real world.’ ” Non-Christian education is what shields a child from the “real world,” the world God created and the world God speaks of in the Bible. Education ung ..read more

Excerpts from The Feminist Bogeywoman (Baker, 1995)

By Rebecca Merrill Groothuis (1954-2018) Q Isn’t evangelical feminism simply the product of an antibiblical, contemporary ideology that has infiltrated the church? A This question has become a central point of contention in the evangelical debate over woman’s “place” in the home and the church. Although traditionalists focus primarily on certain biblical prooftexts to make their case for unequal gender roles, their argument really begins with a set of assumptions about feminism and modern culture. The prooftexts are then interpreted and applied in light of these assumptions. The tra ..read more

Four Books Have Influenced Me in Profound Ways over Many Years

1. C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man (many editions) Considered one of Lewis’s more difficult and less read works (at least in comparison to his fiction or Mere Christianity), Abolition has been indispensible to my intellectual development. I first read it in my sophomore or junior year in college as a philosophy major. It gave me very solid support for the existence of moral values beyond the contingencies of culture. Technically, it is a work of meta-ethics — or the metaphysics of ethics. He argues for “the Tao,” by which he means the objective basis for moral values ..read more

How to be an American Dissident
Douglas Groothuis, Ph.D.
by Douglas Groothuis

When everything is moving at once, nothing appears to be moving, as onboard ship. When everyone is moving towards depravity, no one seems to be moving, but if someone stops, he shows up the others who are rushing on by acting as a fixed point. —Blaise Pascal American culture and politics are in a dizzying freefall. This is evident in many quarters. Consider first the freedom of speech, which is one of the five glorious freedoms of the First Amendment. (You should memorize them.) The new head of Twitter, Parag Agrawal, says he doesn’t think free speech is that important, because ..read more
