I am sixty-five years of age. To my knowledge, I have no life-threatening illness and I am in relatively good shape (but my aching back). I sported my George Orwell t-shirt recently for a bicycle ride. It reads, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” This quote is taken from Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984. Why buy a particular book? We answer that partly by finding who wants us to buy the book. We check the endorsement, which are found in one or more places—front cover, back cover, and opening pages. Some authors do not need endorsements, since they are industries in their own right, such as Stephen King and J. K. Rowling. Lessor mortals court endorsements. Many arguments are marshaled against Christian schools and Christian home-schooling. Those, such as myself, who categorically reject state (public) education as insufficiently Christian, inefficient, and inherently unfair are, in for some lively debates. The objections raised must be met.
