Checked out a few college games Saturday. Also went to a high school game Friday night. In the high school game the officials did an outstanding job. Excellent crew. Marquette at UConn first up. 3:00 PM tip on Fox. UConn is the #1 team in the nation 24-2, 14-1 in the Big East. Marquette 19-6, 10-4 in league, ranked 4th in the country. It only took a few minutes before I reached for the remote and pressed mute. Tim Brando and Donny Marshall were on the call. Huskies crushed the Golden Eagles, 81-53. UConn has now won 14 straight. Marquette entered the game riding an 8-game win streak. Wasn’t mu ..read more

In late December of 1976 I went to St. Thomas Aquinas in Flatlands, Brooklyn to watch the Monsignor King Basketball Tournament. It was the championship game, Power Memorial vs Long Island City. I was 12 at the time and in the sixth grade at Holy Name. After dinner Forte Bellino picked me up on the corner of Windsor and Ninth Avenue and we made the short drive together. Mom had no idea where I was going. When we arrived the gym was packed. We were able to find a couple of seats half way up the bleachers across from L.I.C.’s bench. Power was the defending C.H.S.A.A. city champs and led by 6’2″ E ..read more

In the State of Michigan, high school baseball and softball teams play 38 regular season games. That’s way too many. On most days, they play doubleheaders – that’s not right.  WHY? Think about this; A student attends class from 7:45 AM to 2:35 PM. Gets on the yellow school bus after school for an away game and travels to the opposing field.  First game of the DH starts at 4. After two games we’ll say the second game ends at 8. (Darkness and cold weather also factor in.) Back on the bus following the games, student gets back home at 9.  In some cases they can be at the field for 5 straight hour ..read more

Went out Monday night to watch some high school basketball; caught the second half of the JV game and the varsity game followed. I can’t get believe how bad some fans act at a high school game. I mean I have heard of situations and have read stories but when you hear it first hand, you’re like, “are you serious?” There was one particular fan during the JV game calling out to players using their full name. Pretty lame if you ask me. Not to mention you can hear everything he was saying because the gym was half-empty.  As for the varsity game, the officials struggled. Right off the bat, one of th ..read more

Watched the Super Bowl Sunday night. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs.  Usher was awesome at half-time. The NBA should do what the NFL and the NCAA does; one game to decide the championship. No more best of 7 crap.  Steve Lappas worked the Michigan State-Illinois game Saturday. He did an outstanding job. After a questionable call by a ref, Lappas shouted, “that was a horrendous call.” Speaking of announcers, Tony Romo is awesome. I like “In the Huddle” brought to you by Fox Network. Danny Hurley is one of the best. This past weekend cameras and microphones focused in on UConn’s huddle ..read more

Went out Friday night to watch a boys varsity game.  Solid game. Up and down. Teams pushing the pace.  Decent outside shooting. Solid defense. Sharing of the ball. Good coaching from both sides. Good crowd. Good concessions. Officials did a solid job. The officials, now that’s always an interesting discussion. Leave these men and women alone. Heard a fan scream something out to one of them tonight about a call. SMH… Just this past week we watched three college coaches rip into the officials and get ejected. Kelvin Sampson at Houston, Scott Drew at Baylor and Chris Collins at Northwestern, acti ..read more

Saturday afternoon, St. John’s-UConn from Madison Square Garden. 12 noon. MSG packed. Sold out. SRO. Scalpers dream. The late Rodney Parker used to make a killing.  Felt like an old school, 1980’s Big East Game. Boy do I miss those days. Butler, Creighton, Marquette, Xavier, and DePaul do not belong in the Big East. Bring back Syracuse, Pitt and Boston College.  Huskies entered the day 19-2, 9-1. Johnnies, 13-8, 5-5.  It’s the second time the schools are meeting this year, Huskies won at home on December 23, 69-65.  UConn favorite today by 3.5. Danny Hurley has done an amazing job at UConn. Pi ..read more

Basketball coach John MacLeod once said, “The most critical are the least knowledgeable.” Boy was he on point. Anyone who thinks Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is at fault for the Lions 34-31 NFC championship loss to the 49ers is clueless.  If you want to blame anyone, which we really shouldn’t but that’s what society likes to do, how about the guy that dropped two passes?  But later for that, I’m not blaming anyone. You win as a team and lose as a team. The Lions are relevant. They have improved. The arrow is pointing up. Campbell has done a tremendous job in his three years in Detroit ..read more

Someone help me out. What has happened to Louisville (6-13, 1-7) DePaul (3-16, 0-8) Georgetown (8-12, 1-8) and Michigan (7-12, 2-6)? I’ll even throw the University of Detroit in there. Titans haven’t won a game all year. They’re 0-21.  Yo Candace Parker, you need to do your homework. Your recent comments abut Jalen Brunson were way off. She said this on TNT: “When the game slows down in the playoffs, and you get jammed up, we’ve seen Jalen Brunson in the playoffs with the [Mavericks], and he was No. 2, No. 3, came in, played minutes, supplemented Luka [Doncic] handling the ball, but as a No. 1 ..read more
