Five years of teaching yoga! This feels like such a milestone and this year I reached 1000 hours of teaching. In the eyes of Yoga Alliance this means I’m an experienced yoga teacher, but I still very much feel like a student. That is the wonderful thing about yoga, there is always more to explore and such a great variety of styles to choose from. What has changed since last year? So, no surprises that Covid is still with us, but absolutely incredible that a vaccine has been developed and is now in full swing. I’m pleased to say I’m double jabbed. The return of face to face classes whilst still ..read more

The Sleep Season: Part 4

In the final part of the Sleep Season mini podcast series Selina from Sleep and Flourish interviewed me, which was a first. It definitely felt very strange being on the ‘other side’ but it was lovely to have another opportunity to catch up with Selina. Here are a few of the highlights from the chat. Why is yoga so good before bed? We may not think we hold much tension in our body, but by stretching before bed and focussing on slow mindful breathing it can really help to calm the body and mind. Use your breath as a guide, to move and calm the body and mind. Your breath can tell you if you’ve go ..read more

Anja is also another guest returning from Season 1 and this time we chatted about how Ayurveda practices can affect the quality of your sleep. I love the cross over between Ayurveda and nutrition. They both compliment the body’s natural rhythm and cycles. After my chat with Anja I tried her recommendation for a turmeric and cinnamon latte before bed and a self foot massage, so good.   Anja’s book recommendations My Grandmother’s hands – Resmaa Menakem Accessing the healing power of the vagus nerve – Stanley Rosenburg   Liz’s book recommendation Ayurveda:  Life, health, longevity ..read more

Sandrine from Savoir Fayre is a returning guest from Season 1. We chatted about how food can impact your quality of sleep. I love food and I love a good night’s sleep. Doesn’t everyone? Sometimes a good night’s sleep can feel elusive, but as well as creating a bedtime routine, see part 1 of the blog, we can also supplement a good night’s sleep with the food we eat. During the podcast Sandrine gave great advice on how nutrition can affect your sleep. She also put one of my food myths to bed (Pardon the pun!). I always thought that Bananas were good for sleep, but actually they are probably much ..read more

At the time of year when the nights are long, it’s a great time to focus on sleep. This month I’ll be releasing a blog each week to highlight some of the guests top tips from the podcast they featured on. What is the quality of your sleep like? How does sleep affect your day? I love a good night’s sleep and I’ve had the fortune of meeting and chatting to a few other people who also love a good night’s sleep and have specialised in the field of sleep. Check out the podcast Who’s on the mat? With Liz Daffen to listen to the mini series on sleep. My guests were: Selina from Sleep + Flourish Hann ..read more

Wow! Four years on after graduating from the 200 Hour Teacher training with Yoga London! So what has changed since last year? Well, where the obvious thing to mention is Covid-19! That was a bit of a blow, especially for someone who only started to be full time self-employed from last year. Essentially no financial support available. However where there’s a challenge, there’s an opportunity! If you had asked me last year if I wanted to teach online I would have laughed. Me really? *Cue lots of self-deprecating and unworthiness thoughts. (and yes, I know better than this to listen to those thou ..read more

Podcasting – there are so many out there! But isn’t that great? There is a podcast out there for everyone. When I made the jump to full time self-employment last year (Jan 2019) I thought a podcast would be great fun, but it wasn’t on my agenda for the first year. 2020 came around and I re-visited the idea and felt comfortable to be able to start it, having settled into my current routine. Starting the podcast I announced at a couple of networking events that I was starting a podcast, nothing like committing in public your intentions to feel committed to your goals! I was just getting my idea ..read more

Skipping! I’ve had an urge to get back into skipping, because it’s such a great exercise and I love to do other exercises as well as yoga and Pilates. Having talked about skipping with a couple of people in classes it seems that some of you are also up for some skipping. The idea is to make it short enough that it is manageable for everyone, and you can always pick it up again whenever you fancy.   So here it is the 10 day skipping challenge! #10dayskippingchallenge Why? In short: Because its quick and gives you a great work out. I’ve always enjoyed a little bit of skipping and eve ..read more

Did someone say New Year’s resolution?

January, the month of diets, no drinking and resolutions. Not for me though. I can’t remember the last time I set a New Year’s resolution. January can be one of the worse months of the year, the sparkle of Christmas has gone and we’re left with cold, often damp, grey days. The first week back at work seems tough, but it’s not until the third Monday in January, which has been nicknamed Blue Monday, that is deemed the toughest day, as by this point most people have lost their New Year’s resolution(s) mojo. January for me has become a month of celebrating birthdays and getting in a few belated ..read more

Why I teach

I’ve been asked this a couple of times, and I’ve always responded with ‘Lots of reasons!’, but mainly: I enjoy helping people to feel better. I love movement. I feel passionate about maintaining fitness, particularly as we get older.   I’ve felt the benefits of exercise physically as well as mentally whilst experiencing a tough bereavement. Prior to the bereavement I enjoyed high energy classes, but this was a kind of grief I had never experienced, and it seemed to occur during a period where a few people around us died. I still wanted to move but felt far too drained for a Spin class or Body ..read more
