We made it through another winter! Yayee!! Flowers are blooming and the birds are chirping. And here in Rochester, NY, we experienced the totality of the eclipse which was awesome even though we had heavy cloud cover that blocked the view of the whole show. Although we couldn’t see it happening, when the moon totally covered the sun it became as dark as night. That 3 minutes of darkness in the middle of the afternoon was something to behold. All the neighbors were out in the street just to see it happen. It was a once in a lifetime experience for sure. And of course, an hour after it was all o ..read more

The clue #3 said to use the 64 colored 1 1/2″ (2 1/2″) squares. It should read use the 64 colored 1 1/2″ (2″) squares. I have changed the post to reflect the correct measurement.  If you have already downloaded or printed the instructions please remember to update them. Sorry about the typo. I usually write the clues on the day that I post them but since I’m leaving on a retreat tomorrow I decided to get it done early.  Usually our retreats are on the weekends but since we are all retired we decided to have it during the week.  Why Not??!!  I was thinking wouldn’t it be fun if we could all go on a retreat together.  We’d finally get to meet each other. Just have a good time.  We’d need a convention center at the least. Sew the mystery. Whoa, scraps as far as the eye could see! Wouldn’t that be fun!! I’d love it! And there’s my cute little puppy! She’s chew ..read more

A Valentine Clue for YOU!

You made it to clue #2 and in my mind, here comes the fun part.  For those of you who like to match, this mystery will give you ample opportunity. For those of you who randomly pick your pieces, you can have fun with that too.  Myself, even though I’m not a matchy kind of scrappy person, I like to “audition” who lives next to each other.  Hopefully, you have a multitude of different scrap fabrics to chose from. For this quilt the more the better!! For the most part, many of the recipe squares will be cut on both diagonals so that already gives you four sections that are the same ..read more

Scraps Galore Update

The previous post has been updated to correct two typos. First 10 squares cut on one diagonal make 20 HST not 16. Second the last part of the clue makes 8 finished blocks not 10. Set aside the remaining sections to be used later. Sorry about the confusion!   The post Scraps Galore Update appeared first on Charlotte Hawkes Quilts ..read more

A New Year and A New Mystery

Here we are! We made it through! Another year and more scraps!!!! At least that’s what it is at my house. But things aren’t the same old same old here.  I’m half way between “good dog!!” and “What Was I Thinking!!!!”. Since my house was getting back to the new normal after my husband’s passing……and I really was enjoying the time and quiet……I started looking at puppies on Facebook.  Not a good thing to do!!!  I saw some cuties at a local pet shop and I thought well I’ll just go stop by and see them.  Wrong! You can just look at puppies and not bring one home! So now Sophie a ..read more

It’s that time again!  WaaHoo!!! I seem to be a little late this year. I had good intentions but life has been taking up too much time these days.  I’m looking forward to some peaceful (pieceful) days. Maybe good old mother nature can rustle up a good old snow storm! But then again you have to be careful what you wish for in these parts! It took me a while to come up with this mystery.  I always like to figure out something different, not your average run of the mill scrappy quilt and I think this one might do it.  Again, there will be two sizes – about 58″ square or 82″ sq ..read more

Here we are at the end of another mystery. The biggest mystery may be how we even got here! But we made it!!! We still have a bit to go but, like I said, the end is near! The light is at the end of the tunnel! My life will, hopefully, get back to some sort of normal too. My mother’s house is about to be sold. The estate sale starts tomorrow. But then there’s the clean up of everything that didn’t get sold. Happy Mother’s Day! I still have to wade through probate for my husband. But this mystery can finally be put to bed. I’ve made both sizes and the two quilt tops are going to live in the “wai ..read more

Yes, and here we are again! Spring has finally started to show up around here although it’s supposed to snow a bit next week.  I posted a picture of some of my garden coming to life.  Yayee! Spring and warm weather!!! Did you ever think about all those scraps that you’ve been saving……put aside? You know…….all the ones you didn’t pick? The ones left over, too ugly, just didn’t go or didn’t match! I know I was always one of those kids that always got picked last for the team.  Well, think about all those little squares couped up in a bag or in a box sometimes for years! LOL! There ..read more

First, I want to welcome all the new members that have found us this year! It always amazes me when there is a burst of new people.  I never advertise so I always wonder how you found me. My joy is seeing the fun comments and posts of all of you.  Although I do appreciate it when someone buys a pattern from Etsy. Thank you! I thought I’d post a picture of one of my favorite places to be. Some of you may remember the mystery we did a couple of years ago….Summer Stars on Fawn Lake.  Well, here is a picture of Fawn Lake from the kitchen window.  I wish I could be there ..read more
