Hello Ahimsa Yoga Family! This blog post is directly from Kim Wade, one of your Ahimsa Yoga Teachers. I asked Kelly if I could reach out to you directly for a couple of reasons: 1. I turned 50 years old last month. And I live with tech savvy teenagers. So for those of you who have lost your yoga practice since we went online, I feel you. I see you. I know that the tech required to show up for your yoga practice has turned quite a few of you off from getting to your mat. And I am writing this email to you to highly encourage you to reconsider. 2. I have received quite a lot of feedback fro ..read more

Thank You for Helping Us Turn 10! We are celebrating the 10th anniversary of Ahimsa Yoga Studio's opening in Oak Park!! We both wanted to share our personal thoughts about this momentous occasion with you. Please read on! Kelly: I had only started the studio's lease May 1st and my family and friends and I busted our butts to get the studio ready as quickly as possible. I remember Masin urging me to take a little break and open June 1st, but, as always, I was too eager. We had 4 classes on Thursday, May 4th. The first was a Hatha class at 10:15am taught by a wonderful teacher named Gosia. My da ..read more

There are so many reasons I love getting out in nature with my family! Not only are there many positive health effects, mentally and physically, but it is also a time for my family to bond. We have been going on hikes at local forest preserves as a family since I was pregnant with my first child, the time spent hiking not only helped improve my lung function and help mitigate the common pregnancy ailments but it also is a great way to destress. As my children have grown we have taken our exploring in nature to new levels, we sometimes spend hours in the woods just playing. This type of play p ..read more

Know Where Stress Lives in Your Body by Susanne Hamaj

Stress has always been a part of the human condition. Years ago, humans used the majority of their time to satisfy their basic needs, food, shelter and security. This left them little time  to stress about anything else. Today, most of us are fortunate to have our basic needs met,  allowing us more time, to perhaps overthink or worry.  Stress can play a positive role in our lives, acting as a motivator, an incentive for change, and presence of mind. But it is important to identify where stress affects us negatively and how to act on reducing the tension, even eliminate the sour ..read more

You Are What You Eat: Fighting Anxiety and Depression One Bite at A Time by Cassie Quick

We’ve heard the age old expression “you are what you eat” probably more times than we can count.  And for most of my life, this adage has conjured up images from elementary school health books...the dazzling, bright smiles of the happy dancing glass of milk and over-sized pieces of fruit in contrast to the sad, run-down can of soda and chocolate bar slumped on the ground.  It’s an oversimplified lesson, yes, but as human beings, we generally agree that healthy, whole foods make us feel better while processed, sugary junk foods do not (think about how your stomach feels after a big h ..read more

Sleep Like a Yogi by David Driscoll

A little stress is necessary. Stress is the body’s way of preparing us to tackle challenges. But stress is only healthy if it lasts a relatively short amount of time, say from the time it takes to prepare a presentation until the presentation is over, or from the moments leading up to a difficult conversation with with a loved one until the two of you are hugging it out in your favorite dress-up clothes. If stress goes on too long, we call it chronic. Our bodies and minds get stuck in a state of arousal, which is unsurprisingly exhausting and can have a number of deleterious effects on ..read more
