Currently we are test burning Eco Wicks in Golden Brands 464 Soy Wax with a three inch diameter container that is three inches deep.  The depth is important to mention because any container with two inches or more of depth will have more trapped heat than candles that are shorter.  Trapped heat melts the sides of the candle more and greatly affects the candles burn and wick trimming needs.  The results of this test can from that of others depending on personal conditions. The current test is at 30 hours into the burn.  Generally, at this point we should be seeing full melt ..read more

What is the scent you might be wondering? Of course it is hard to explain. So, a story - There was a day that we took our 1 year old Border Collie, Mookie to the park. This park is special. Indian Lake abuts almost 800 acres of park which includes a meadow, spring fed lake and rolling forest in the background. And in a certain section dogs are allowed off leash.  It was one of those days that most people would never dream of going to the park. Raining for days and days. We knew what was waiting for us when we got done, but did I mention that we have a Border Collie ..read more

I have been in this field for a long time now.  I have been professional since 1999 but I actually started making candles when I was 17.  That was 1986!  So I have seen a lot of changes!  And I have seen a ton of people come and go.  Some leave because they have had a good run and it is time to retire but others leave far too early and it is due to one thing.  Lack of support.  Yes, some people were never cut out to make it in the first place.  Some didn't put the time or energy into their products and they were doomed to fail.  I am not tal ..read more

First and foremost let me just say that I have not actually made a candles with Penreco Medium Density Gel Wax at this point.  But I am putting it through various tests to know more about this crazy stuff.   To start with - 1)Weird - Cool but weird to work with.  If you rip, roll or tear it and there are tiny little bits around, you will end up finding tiny little bits everywhere!  Always a good idea to wear gloves when working with this stuff.   2)All gel wax comes from one company - Penreco.  Or at least it should since they hold the patent.  A ..read more

In my search for the perfect Wisconsin Brandy Old Fashioned I have hit an unexpected detour! In my batch of BOF testers there was one that had a special something! Definately not a Brandy Old Fashioned. But it did have a brandy smell and something else! So, off to reasearch! This is a little backwards from the way that I normally do things. I generally have the concept and contact various scent manufacturers until we find the scent I am looking for. This time is a little different. I have the scent first! This scent is amazing! I did have it tweeked a little more and the brandy was made into ..read more

Color Differences in Natural Waxes from Batch to Batch If you use truly natural waxes with any frequency I am sure that you have noticed color differences.  This is a natural occurrence in natural waxes.  I just want to point this out because I don't want people to assume that a bait and switch is occurring at any businesses.  Natural waxes have their quirks.  And truly natural products are the quirkiest of the quirky!  And wax color is one of the aspects of being a natural product that can change dramatically.  Why, you may ask.  Well, let me help yo ..read more

Mixing Scents to Create your own Combinations for Candles with Candle Cocoon Scents

Mixing scents is not something that we generally do here at Candle Cocoon.  I am sure that I have ranted about my terrible experiences when starting out trying to create a Raspberry Violet.  Short story - Over 100 tries and ranged from terrible to dog poo to eh.  I now leave the blending to the experts and I just provide the nose and reviews.  It was so disheartening for me.  Even when I found something pleasant it was still just flat and kinda like a mush not the distinct notes that I want.  Not to mention that if you are taking the offering ..read more
