To me photography has always been the creation of an image. When I stand in front of my subject matter I always think about the finished product before I begin. What do I want to create? How do I do it? Just take a few minutes out of your day and read on to find out. Kauai Hawaii 3 filters on the lens. I love to photograph everything natural, oceans, waves, trees, waterfalls, big vistas, and night skies. It’s the thought process that goes into the creation that is vitally important. So as an example I will write about the natural subject matter I love to capture. I will share a few tips and ho ..read more

Kase Armour System How it Works

The newest Kase filters are the Armour System. It has so much going for it. Like I have said before the R&D department of Kase Global continues to knock things right out of the ballpark. They have now turned the sheet glass filters into magnetic ones. And the good news is you can use the K9 filters as well. All you have to do is buy the magnetic frame that goes around the filters. So the way it works is you can buy the kits ready to go or you can buy the pieces you need. So if you are a sheet glass filter user and your filters are 100x100mm 2mm thick or 150 x100 2mm thick the frames will ..read more

Kase Leads With Filter Technology

Just like everything else, it seems you get what you pay for, and keeping up with the newest technology is very important. I remember using filters on my film cameras in 1970 and at that time I was impressed with the results. If I used those filters today I would likely throw them as far as I could and never look for them. So the times change the format changes and the next thing you know it is 40 plus years later and I am still shooting with filters on the front of the lens. I remember back in the mid-1970 time filters we almost all you could do to control light in the camera. Once you develo ..read more

Tripods are Worth Their Weight in Gold

If you are a true landscape photographer then you know how important tripods are. I can honestly say that I can’t remember the last time I took a photo without a camera attached to a tripod. If you want to become a better landscape photographer do not take another photo without a tripod! I find the tripod does many things. It really helps with the composition because you are able to move the camera slowly and make slight adjustments to the scene you want to capture. It gives you the opportunity to look around the entire frame and look for things that do not belong. They operate like a foundat ..read more

Filters Make You Creative

Well, 42 years ago I thought it was a great idea to set up a Photography Company. It turns out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. There is so much satisfaction in capturing a moment that passes so quickly. In the moment however you get to make all the decisions. I tell all my workshop participants “Remember you are smatter than your Camera and you tell it what to do and not the other way around.” So not in any particular order here is what I do. Shot with a polarizer and an ND I would have to say that 95%of my images are shot with the use of filters. I started this back in the f ..read more

Creating Images Sharp Front to Back using the Hyperfocal distance Calculations

Separating Distance Between the Foreground and Background In order to give your image some depth, I have found if the image is sharp front to back it works the best. So be sure to understand the capabilities of your lenses and how to get the best out of them. I am not familiar with focus stacking and how it works so I used the old method of understanding distance. EXAMPLE Sharp front to back at F11 So let’s begin here. All lenses have what I call a happy spot and it is usually 1/2 way between the smallest and largest aperture. The happy spot is where the lens is the sharpest. So if your lens i ..read more

It is so true not all printing companies are equal. In this blog, I will explain the difference between a good fine art print company and one that just takes your money. It is important for you as the Artist to have a good feeling about the printer and its capabilities. If you’re dealing with a print service that you upload your prints to and then they let you know it’s done you might want to rethink the process. Do they inspect for sensor spots, level horizons, exposure, etc? And the most important thing do they care about your finished product. I can tell you in my lab I am able to meet wi ..read more

THE NEW FILTERS ON THE BLOCK. KASE K9

On November 14th, 2019 Kase released its newest filter combo called the K9. Kase was kind enough to send me the kit so I could test it and write this review. The first thing I would like to say is they have not paid me to write this or encouraged me to say anything. This is a completely unbiased review of the product. K9 Holder Kit and ND filters and Lens Cap In the 40 plus years of photography, I have always shot landscapes with filters on the lens. It has been my go-to plan. I am a firm believer that getting it right in the camera makes a better product in the end. I like to control the ligh ..read more

ITALY BUCKET LIST CHECK

For as long as I can remember Italy has been on my Bucket List and now that I checked that off here is what I learned. Like I have said many times do your research before you go. Figure out what you want to see and then determine how long it will take to cover all the areas. For me when I venture to a country for the first time I usually go for a shorter period and then go back for an extended stay if I liked the landscape. We started the trip in Calgary and flew to Germany. A short ride from Germany landed us in Rome. This is where it all began. Assisi Italy  Umbria’s Rolling Hills Our ..read more

Only 3 hours from my home I find myself surrounded by so much Beauty in Yoho National Park. The Emerald Lake area has stunning views in all directions. The capture above was from the Bridge looking down river. The water is an emerald colour caused by fine particles of glacial sediment which is suspended in the water. Emerald Lake If you feel up to it rent a canoe and experience the tranquillity of the lake and its surroundings. There is also a hiking trail around the lake. The Emerald Lake Lodge has rooms to rent. Remember you are in bear country. LOON SWIMMING ACROSS THE LAKE Just down the r ..read more
