What My White Privilege Looks Like and How I’m Using it for Good
VitaTrain4Life

This was not easy to write and it should not be easy to read. In case you left the planet for the past several weeks, maybe you’ve heard it’s time for white people to wake up and be the change. I’m starting by telling you just one story, out of hundreds that I have, on my white privilege and ending with what I’m doing to advocate, educate and take action. I hope you will too. In April of 1994 I attended my dad’s wedding to his second wife. Afterward, I took my cousin with me to a late night party with my friends. I was 19 years old and somehow ended up driving my boyfriend’s car to bring my c ..read more

5 Stages of COVID-19 Quarantine
VitaTrain4Life

It’s been a while! I figured the best time to stage a little check-in would be during a pandemic. I definitely have better things to do but, since I actually get to choose, I’m choosing to write out all my frustrations, humor and beginnings of alcoholism in this post. Join me, won’t you? Everyone is now drinking daily.Stage One: Working from Home My husband already works from home. I hate it. I’ve hated it for years. Any guess as to what I hate more? Snow days. Snow days meant my children would also be home and I would possibly be locked in my home with my entire family all day with no escape ..read more

The Rundown: Radical Acceptance
VitaTrain4Life
by Allie

One of the most mind blowing practices I have learned in grad school so far is the concept of Radical Acceptance. Developed by Marsha Linehan and used in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the practice is based on the notion that reality must be accepted, rather than fought against, and that fighting and railing against a situation is a greater cause of suffering than the situation itself. #boom Living with a president who is a racist, homophobic, sexist, ignorant ass hat? Radical acceptance. Kids taking 15 minutes just to get out of bed in the morning? Radical acceptance. My mom, who would h ..read more

The Rundown: My Cancel Culture

R. Kelly? Canceled. Juul? Also canceled. Toxic people? Canceled, canceled and canceled. In case you’re not familiar, a new-ish popular thing among adolescents and teenagers is to “cancel” offensive things. It’s brilliant when used appropriately. Lately, I’ve been canceling a bunch of shit as my ever-evolving mid-life takes shape. And yes, of course my hair is a different color and no, I’m not canceling the blog…yet. I had a blue Christmas.A LONG DAMN TIME HAS PASSED Obviously I will try not to bore you with all the details since my last post but here are some highlights from the past two month ..read more

The Rundown: Times (and my hair color) Are Changing
VitaTrain4Life
by Allie

If you don’t recognize the title of this post as the partial lyrics from a Bob Dylan song then I may be too old for you. This is basically how I feel at grad school every time I’m on campus and I try not to say anything too trendy (Hey Boomer!) or too old (My bad!) and it’s an interesting dance. At least I’m keeping my hair lively…but that’s not the only thing that’s changing. It had a lot more purple in it two weeks ago…who knows what it will look like two weeks from now?OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2019 RUNNING It’s funny, now that I have zero upcoming races on my calendar (a huge change!), running has ..read more

The Rundown: Don’t Call it A Comeback

It’s been a beat but I’m back…for now. Between grad school taking over everything, training and racing a half marathon last weekend and life in general, I haven’t made time to write here until now. Let’s see how much I can cram into this post before I disappear into oblivion again… Look ma! It’s fall in New England!SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER | 2019 RUNNING + RACING If you recall, I have been training for what will most likely be my last goal race for a while. The Hartford Half Marathon was last weekend and my true goal was to feel good and strong to the finish and win the mental battle. Mission accom ..read more

The Rundown: What’s Age Got to do With It?
VitaTrain4Life
by Allie

Apparently, everything. Age is such a gigantic factor in my life right now. I want to be younger so I can run faster and also know wtf these kids I’m in graduate school with are talking about. My kids want to be 18 so they can live alone and watch “Stranger Things” on a loop. My dad (who is 69) declared that “85” is now the official age for being old, and Lenny Kravitz is 55 and looks and sings like someone who is the age my kids want to be. Make it stop. Not you Lenny. Don’t you dare stop! WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 2, 2019 RUNNING My favorite mantra is “train where you are.” Not where you once were o ..read more

The Cannabis Experiment
VitaTrain4Life

It should not be too shocking to read that I’m experimenting with cannabis. I’m desperately trying to find something that will suppress my amygdala when flying and keep my anxiety, and the accompanying panic attacks, at bay. And I also just want to get high sometimes. Image source: https://netacare.orgThe sale and use of cannabis (weed, marijuana, pot, reefer, etc.) is legal in the state of Massachusetts which is a mere bike ride away from where I live in Connecticut. I did not ride my bike (thank God!) but drove with a friend of mine a few weeks back, to check out a dispensary in Northampton ..read more

The Rundown: See Ya, Summer!

Sorry summer but don’t let the door hit you on the way out! Time’s up. Please go. That’s right, I live in the Northeast and I’m very much looking forward to fall and winter, my two favorite times of the year. Here’s why… Running around the University of Connecticut with Nat two weeks back…in the hot sun!WEEK OF AUGUST 19, 2019 RUNNING I will not miss running in the heat and humidity one bit! I much prefer being cold at the start (and even middle and end!) of a run then the sufferfest of hot that has been the majority of this summer. Please, make it stop! Oh and the bugs! There’s nothing worse ..read more

The Rundown: 4 Vacations and A Funeral
VitaTrain4Life

Although I did not actually have four vacations, it felt like I did since I’ve had about four weeks off from posting here. Unfortunately, the funeral was very real and came at the worst possible time for me, and obviously, the deceased. Let’s catch up, shall we? Just riding around the Cape with the fam. Life is good.JULY 27 – AUGUST 10, 2019 RUNNING Running has been amazing or horrible, depending solely on the weather and how much I had to drink the night before. Running on Cape Cod is usually amazing because I’m running to the ocean or by the ocean or with a view of the ocean and how great is ..read more
