Savings… why you need them! It is never too early to start setting financial goals and learn about money and how to manage it better. You can only learn this in practice and small habits built now can easily be adapted later on when you are making more – with a more impressive pay-off. As a fully self-funded student… In all honesty, I do not make enough to make considerable deposits to my savings. For me, it has been more of a mentality shift than anything else. When you do not have a lot of funds available it’s easy to think it doesn’t matter, so why bother trying to save. Or to think “I’ll j ..read more

Why I still have a weekly allowance

Over the last couple of years, I have become much more intentional about my spending. It helps me worry less and focus on my studies without wrecking my mental health. So, budgeting and saving have been a godsend! That being said, I noticed a pattern of spending too much of my money immediately after payday and then scrambling the rest of the month. So, I amended the way I budget. I continued to plan monthly but also made my weekly budget as well that consists solely of money for groceries, pocket money when on campus or at work, weekly transportation costs and some wiggle room. My advice is t ..read more

Unless you have gone on a deep dive into every single thing you spent any money on over the last year… chances are you are not as aware of how much you are spending on things as you might think. Particularly if you are struggling with money or if you find yourself living on ramen the last week before SAAS or your pay comes in. Student life is stressful and exciting, and I get it, you want to focus on what is important so sometimes you feel too tired to do the grocery shopping, cooking cleaning, etc and just want some takeaway a bit too often. You also want to enjoy the few years of your life t ..read more

Being a part of society at University: Is It Worth it?
University Of Dundee Student Blog

Hi, I’m Alison. I am in my third year at the University of Dundee, and I have been part of the Dundee University Ladies’ Hockey Club (DULHC) for my whole time here. I played hockey previously in school, but in my last two years, I didn’t enjoy it as much. Due to Covid, games/training could not go ahead, so school hockey at home really lost its momentum. Why did I choose to join a Society? When coming to University, I was keen to join a society or club for the social aspect, but I didn’t know what to go for. I didn’t really consider hockey because I hadn’t enjoyed it previously, and I didn’t w ..read more

I will let you in on a (not so) secret: meal prep services are your SAVIOR during stressful academic periods. We’ve started getting things from Hello Fresh. In the past two weeks I’ve had the chance to visit the DCA with friends and watch a couple of very interesting movies. I had never heard of either coming out, but when I checked the DCA website for what’s playing, both of them peaked my interest and so the tickets were booked! Here is my review of Blackberry, directed by Matthew Johnson and Dumb Money, directed by Craig Gillespie. Blackberry – 8/10 I grew up in the generation that was not present in the peak time of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian’s obsession with the Blackberry phones, so it was super interesting to see what the craze was abo ..read more

As the new year approaches, a lot of students will begin to think about getting a flat for next school year. It’s really difficult moving in with people you don’t know, especially when you have to organise it without the help of your university or a specialised accommodation company. Here are some questions to consider before choosing to move in with strangers. Are you the same type of person? Do you both like to go out or host parties or are you both more comfortable with staying in and chilling with Netflix on? Pairing yourself with the same type of person is the first thing you need to do ..read more
