For our 9th challenge of Empower, we were joined by special guest instructor An Di Prima of The Faithful Hound Photography. Andi is an accomplished portrait photographer based in Scotland and was the winner of the documentary category in the 2023 International Pet Photography Awards. Emerge Silhouetto Top 10

We're up to challenge number seven of Emerge, Silhouetto. Silhouettes eliminate textural detail and black out facial expressions, relying instead on the pose and body language of the dog to tell the story. The simplicity of a silhouette helps the subject stand out as the feature of the image, but the lack of detail in the shadows also creates a sense of mystery, leaving the finer details to the viewer's imagination and allowing them to create their own story. We saw some terrific story-telling images in the submission, and several silhouettes created using techniques we haven't seen before in ..read more

Shooting landscapes was an early photographic love for both of us, even when photographing our canine friends these days, there's a real storytelling value in incorporating elements of landscape photography into our work. The 4th challenge in our Embark course is called 'Dogscapes'. As it's the 4th challenge, we're ramping up the 'challenge' part! We asked our challengers to create a Dogscape, ensuring that the image had features of a landscape while still ensuring the dog was the hero of the image. We had a fantastic set of submissions that left us feeling like we’d travelled far and wide. If ..read more

Empower 08 Multi Mania Top 10

When we were setting the Empower briefs, we immediately had a multi dog challenge in mind, building on the skills we taught for the Double Trouble challenge in Emerge. After all, who doesn't love groups of dogs (or other pets)? "Multi Mania" is a portrait challenge so intentional posing and composition are a must and we wanted to see all dogs nicely in focus making sure the plane of focus was correct. In camera captures were encourage, but compositing techniques like head swaps were also allowed. We were completely blown away (do we sound like broken records at this point?), but truly, one of ..read more

For the Composition 101 challenge in Embark, we're looking at a couple of the basic rules of composition. Centring and symmetry. Centring feels very natural and can be used to create a sense of calmness, stillness and serenity. It can also work hand in hand with another compositional element, symmetry, resulting in very balanced images. We had a fantastic set of submissions for this challenge and we're very excited to reveal the top 10 images. Huge congratulations on the fantastic work go to our challengers! - Charlotte & Craig ? ? ✨ Abi Bradbury | Abi B Photography This dog is full of ty ..read more

Using off camera flash has become very popular in the pet photography space, thanks largely to the popularity of Dog Breath Photography’s vibrant wide angle style. But there are so many other ways to use lighting to create a unique looking image without replicating this well-known look. Using artificial lighting can open up a whole new world of possibilities, allowing you to work throughout the day when the light isn’t flattering when only using natural light, and further into the night. For the 7th challenge of Empower, Light It Up, we tasked our challengers to use artificial light to illumin ..read more

Emerge Pantastic Top 10

Panning is the technique of following the motion of something as it moves from side to side across the scene in front of you. Using a super fast shutter speed will freeze the motion sharply, but can mean the image lacks interest. Using a slower shutter speed when panning gives you the unique ability to be able to combine frozen motion, with blurred motion, in the one shot. For the Pantastic challenge in our Emerge course, we wanted to see our challengers nail the technique and boy, did they nail it! We had a fantastic set of submissions, and selecting the top 10 was a challenge for us! Here, i ..read more

Empower 06 In Depth Top 10

Attempting to represent our three dimensional world through a two dimensional medium such as a photograph is no easy task, but that’s the challenge we take on every time we shoot. Depth is defined as the perceived distance between the closest and farthest objects in a scene. By including a visible foreground, middle ground (which is often the subject itself) and background, you build up a three-dimensional feel to your images, making them more dynamic and immersive. For this Empower course challenge we wanted to see our challengers create images with depth. As you will all have come to expect ..read more
