HOW I WROTE PEASANT WOMAN NUMBER FOUR by ANGELA READMAN

This was one of the stories that took years to write. Some stories are like that. You’ll see something and know you must write about, but you aren’t sure why yet. Sometimes you have to do a bit more living, I think, the time has to feel right. I went to Beamish 7 years ago. It was unusual, in that I’ve lived in the north of England all my life but had somehow never been. I loved it. The site, the buildings they took down and built again brick by brick, the costumes, and sense of daily life in another time. I came away knowing I’d write about it. I didn’t know the story yet though. I only kne ..read more

HOW I WROTE BLOODSTOCK BY PAUL DAVENPORT-RANDELL

I’d wanted to base a piece of fiction around the modern slave trade for some while. It took two or three aborted attempts, however, before the story finally found a form. Indeed, due to these series of false starts, I almost gave up on the idea altogether, and Bloodstock nearly did not get written at all. These earlier failures were, I decided, due to my arrogantly dismissing received wisdom and trying to write upon a subject about which I knew nothing, about which I had no direct knowledge. After a pregnancy plagued with problems due to placenta praevia – and the constant worry that, as parents-to-be in our forties, many things could go wrong – we knew the risks were high. When he arrived, after a planned C-section, our son weighed only three pounds and 15 ounces. He suffered a ‘blue episode’ in his first minutes of life, where he stopped breathing for a number of seconds and had to be resuscitated.  He then spe ..read more

Come and celebrate the launch of Unthology 11, edited by Ashley Stokes and Tom Vowler. All stories come from the hinterlands. Readings by Jude Cook, Paul Davenport Randell, Georgina Parfitt and Rachael Smart. What would it take to push you to the edge? And beyond? The moth that flutters round a bulb. The echo of long-drinking that hums inside your head. Your softness against all that hardness. The reflections of the glass megalith. The darkening street beneath a line of magnolia trees. The leaves of the apple tree freckled with rot. A black and ragged looking bird. One of those planes that pul ..read more

Our short fiction editor Tom Vowler talks to Nick Holdstock about his forthcoming collection, The False River. Tom: Hi Nick. Thanks for agreeing to chat about your collection, The False River, and in particular one of the stories, ‘Half’, which will first appear in Unthology 11 and is already causing a social media buzz among reviewers. Your book was my first selection as a commissioning editor for Unthank, and one thing that seduced me from the outset was the assuredness and beauty of the language. How it functions on an affective and abstract level, one beyond mere exposition, while managing ..read more
