Hi photography crew, ok yes you’re right, that’s a terrible title but we’ll have to think of a better one another time as we’ve got lots to cover today.
So in the last blog we focussed on getting your camera into manual and moving your aperture and shutter speed onto a general catch-all setting, which allowed us to then focus on ISO.
Hopefully you’ve had the chance to practice, working out where the ISO is on your camera and playing to see what impact it has on an image as this number goes up and down (the higher the number the brighter the image gets, the lower the number the darker it gets ..read more

Ok so you’ve got some amazing photos you love, but what now?
More often than not they’re left sitting on a hard drive, or on a USB and they’re not much good to anyone on there.
Photos are made for printing and displaying, so you can see them everyday and smile.
That’s the exact reason that with every one of my sessions I include 6×4 inch prints and also a large 20×20 inch print.
Everyone that comes to see me has little ones and I know first hand how hard it is to find time to shower let alone pick photos to print and frame.
So I take away the hard work and after your session you receive a besp ..read more

Did you get a posh camera one birthday, or treat yourself before your baby was born, but have yet to ever try it out of auto?
Well then this series of blogs is for you.
As a professional photographer I could immediately start talking about the exposure triangle, composition, the rule of thirds.
But all that would achieve is scaring you & most likely putting you off ever trying to get your camera out of auto.
So that’s why in these blogs I’m doing things differently.
Every couple of weeks I’ll write a new blog which breaks down one piece of the photography puzzle at a time.
You then have a ..read more

Photos of baby laying on their back & looking up – I usually capture these when baby is having a nappy change & I use a baby mobile to guide their eyes to the light & also make it fun for them.
Photos of baby sitting/crawling & looking up – these can be tricky if baby isn’t 100% confident with sitting, so I wouldn’t recommend trying this until baby is at least 8 months. But if baby is sitting well then bring out the bubbles or a rattle. It’s also handy if the bubbles are little/discreet, just in case an older sibling spots them & wants to hold them for the rest of the p ..read more

I often get asked about what lighting I use & why, so I thought it could make for a handy blog.
Here goes with the top 5 questions I’m often asked about the lighting I use in my studio.
What lighting do you use?
It’s an obvious one to start with & the question I get asked the most.
I shoot probably 98% of my sessions with natural light, I love the depth that natural light creates & those gorgeous graduations of light to shadows.
I have a large window in my home studio that is almost down to the floor & up to the ceiling.
What do you do on cloudy/dark days?
As soon as peopl ..read more

What’s the best family camera to get? It’s a question I get asked all the time & so thought it could make a good subject for a little blog.
As a photographer I could rattle on for hours about cameras, settings & lenses, but I’m going to try & keep this sweet & simple.
So here are my 5 tips for anyone looking for a new camera to capture photos of your family.
Crop Frame (DX)
Professional photographers would all have a full frame camera, mainly because it makes it easier for us to get those nice creamy blurred backgrounds.
But the jump from crop frame cameras to full frame is h ..read more

I’m lucky that I get to speak to so many amazing photographers & these are the top 5 questions that I get asked.
What is your flooring?
My floor in the studio is a white vinyl floor that’s laid as a permanent floor (as opposed to a piece of it).
I also recently brought a rug from Maison Du Monde & I’m finding that works really well, so if you wanted a temporary white flooring solution it’s worth having a look at this.
What’s your favourite lens?
I shoot with a Nikon D850 which I love, it handles low light really well.
I find though with Nikon lenses I don’t tend to like the colours ..read more

If anyone asks I often play it down, “crazy isn’t it”, “no idea how it happened”, “what madness hey”.
But in all honesty hitting over 22k followers on Instagram didn’t just happen and it wasn’t a wonderful surprise.
It’s been the result of a constant effort to keep building my Instagram account.
Although I say these tips are for photographers in the title, they could really apply to any small business.
So here are the top 5 things that I think have helped me grow my Instagram account to over 22k followers in under 2 years.
Forget business
Instagram accounts that are flying are those that eng ..read more

My boys love Minecraft, in fact they love it so much they’d happily sit playing on their iPad all day.
So I started designing worksheets to help me plan activities that would get them off of the iPad and actually engaging with us.
I was utterly floored when I started getting messages from people who wanted to buy them. But decided to start a little Etsy shop called Bee Little Co.
But this blog post isn’t about that, this is a little blog so that I can share my boys favourite worksheets for FREE.
So whether your little one would like to design their own book, or draw a picture of your family h ..read more

Detail shots can be the most impactful images in a gallery, capturing the curl of the eyelashes, or those little creases in their lips.
But they’re also some of the hardest shots to get right.
These are my ultimate top 5 tips for capturing amazing detail shots every time.
Angle, angle, angle
The key thing that differentiates an ok detail shot from an amazing one is the angle you capture it from.
You want the light to just capture the edge of babies fingers, of the creases of their lips.
To get this natural contrast that shows off the details the key I find is to angle my camera to the shado ..read more
