Today we are bringing to you this super cute, quick and easy autumn make by Sew Confident Dundee owner, Sandra. You don’t even need to own a sewing machine as this could all be done by hand sewing. Not only does this make a cute pin cushion, we think a few massive one as seasonal home decorations would look so lovely - and save the mess of pumpkin carving… To complete this project you will need: fabric (Sandra used 2 x 6” squares, Feel free to make this as large or as small as you like) stuffing or fabric scarps to go inside embroidery thread A button needle, long needle scissor ..read more

That Time I Made My Best Friends Wedding Dress...
Sewing Classes & Supplies
by Jenny McCreary

Back in 2015  one of my best friends Susan asked me if I would make her wedding dress...let me tell you, making wedding dresses for people you don’t know is bad enough but making them for someone you love to bits is even worse! ? I think this was the only photo of us together! She did give me a get out of jail free card and said she wouldn’t not feel bad if I didn’t want to do it but I was up for the challenge! Susan was a very chilled bride and ended up finding a skirt she loved on the high street so bought it and I agreed to make the top half. She knew exactly what she wanted so I did ..read more

My name is Sue and I love sewing and here’s my lockdown diary! My parents bought me my first sewing machine when I was 15, so that was about 45 years ago now!   In my twenties I remember making a few items of clothing.  The most memorable was a dress for my bridesmaid......I remember my late mum spotting it in a charity shop window many years later.  Ha Ha!  Not a problem for me now, since I am divorced! Anyway, in the last few years I have restarted my crafty side.  I went along to my first class at Sew Confident Chorley in November last year ..read more

"Time to go back in time" I've always sewed! My mum sewed and taught me as a small girl to make clothes for my dolls and then myself. By 16 I was making curtains for ‘Barratt Homes’ show homes on a big new estate nearby,  this was the early 80s so think BIG Austrian blinds, swags and piping!  I helped my mum to make my wedding dresses and the next year copied an expensive wedding shawl dress for a friend and made her bridesmaids dresses! As my 2 children got older, I got a job and sewed less, I didn't have time… then I got made redundant and had some catching up to do. I went ..read more

‘Not that pattern again!’ Dress making to me has given me a platform for self-expression. Before I began sewing I lived predominantly in the uniform of jeans and t-shirt. Wearing a dress felt like I was dressing up, only used when I had somewhere special to go to. Now wearing a handmade outfit gives me a secret confidence and what I find now is that I will grab a dress over a pair of jeans any day. When I discovered what a sewing pattern were, I first found the Big 4 patterns. I have to admit that the cover photos on the patterns and within the catalogue were very uninspiring. I’ve never been ..read more

Can it really be that we’ve been in lockdown for 6 weeks now and not months? I can’t be the only one who feels like this is the new normal and has gotten rather used to sleeping in, doing some daily exercise and housework, and then spending the rest of the time stitching, binge watching Grey’s Anatomy for the 6th time and joining endless zoom meetings, right?! I have to admit at the start of lockdown I really struggled. I am not the kind of person who does well without a purpose and I can always be found with my diary in hand with all my tasks for the day ahead clearly planned out, so to be to ..read more

My Sewing Journey - A guest blog by Anna Kaminska

Anna Kaminska from @annatriestosew In the summer of 2016, my boyfriend and I were casually strolling through the city (as you do during Scottish summer because there’s no real summer, to be honest) and we walked into John Lewis for a bit of window shopping. I pointed at a mint green sewing machine as we were walking through the shop and mentioned something along the lines of ‘wow, that’s a cool unusual colour for a sewing machine’. Mint was all the rage (like lilac now) a few years ago. To my huge surprise he just said ..read more
