I’ve been working away at a few newish ideas for lighting landscapes. As it turns out the results are quite nice. They offer an entirely new way of looking at an object or landscape, with nearly absolute freedom to paint the land as you see fit. Wrens Egg From simple constructs like the Wren’s Egg above and the Tree of Life below, to more complicated and involved composite images like the shot of Ballymacdermot Court Tomb at the bottom. Tree of Life All of these images were made by attaching lights to a drone and essentially painting with these attached lights. This technique offers the abil ..read more

What can it be that prompts a 16-year-old student to leave his warm bed at 4am on a chilly night and make tracks for Whitehead? When it comes to Jodie McKee, it is a love of trains – and steam trains in particular. Below is a selection of photographs for an article that featured in Kin Magazine. They detail the Steam Raising process of getting a steam engine from a cold lump of metal to a fully operational steam engine ..read more

Last year my friend and I hatched a notion. It was a notion to do something positive and off the back of it came the idea for ‘Kin’. A collaboration between artists and the inspiring people of Northern Ireland. The idea behind Kin is to tell the stories behind the natives of Northern Ireland and how they are contributing to the local & global communities in positive ways. Northern Ireland is a country in transition - a transition out of an era of hatred, violence and division. Our young people (and many older people) ha ..read more

Behind the scenes stills from feature film 'The Dig'. Filmed on a bog, on a hill, in November, in the bitter cold and biting wind. A challenging shoot that left zero time for errors of any description. Shot in 5k RAW with the Inspire 2, the footage matched up perfectly with the Arri Alexa Mini that was used as the A-Cam throughout the rest of the film ..read more

Chasing the Milky Way

Portmuck Island & The Milky Way The Milky Way is something I've never attempted to photograph before, but with the recent push into aerial photography it seems only natural that I am looking to the skies a little more. As luck would have it the Milky Way was visible tonight, so I thought I'd give it a bash. The first thing that has cropped up is like that scene in Jaws where Roy Scheider says "We're gonna need a bigger boat." Well - "I'm gonna need a wider lens!" That thing is massive. Trying to get a sense of the curvature of it on ..read more

Murder Hole Beach, Donegal This has been on my todo list for a very long time. Sitting near the northern most point of Ireland on the Fanad Peninsula, Murder Hole is an absolute paradise location. It is well hidden and with good reason.   I overheard a conversation in the local bar, 'The Singing Pub', about the landowner who's field you must cross to get to Murder Hole. It went along the lines of - tourists are wrecking all his fences in their attempts to access varyi ..read more

Freckle Magazine is a publication that is a very welcome sight in Northern Ireland. It embraces the values of slow journalism, concentrating on positivity and creativity. All the contributors work on a voluntary basis and do so for the love of creating something that will have a positive effect on readers. Alasdair completed his first assignment for them towards the end of 2017. It was about a fiddle maker in Belfast called Aiden Mulholland ..read more
