Wadsworth Trog 2024 – “The Beast?”

No muddy shoes allowed when collecting your finishing soup Procrastination prevented me from getting into the LDWA ‘That’s Lyth’ challenge at the end of January, so I was scouting about for a long race about the same time and came across the ‘Trog’on the first Saturday in February. It’s a BL – 19.3 miles (31km)/3642ft (1110m) race around the moors north of Hebden Bridge. No opportunity to recce the route meant I felt happier poring over google satellite and the race route map for hours rather than trust the luck of following others. I also trawled other user experiences on the web for clue ..read more

Kong Mini Mountain Marathon: Chapel Stile by Rose Singleton

I signed up to do this in a pair with Natalie Hawkrigg a few weeks ago thinking it would be good preparation for the Teenager With Altitude fell race the following weekend. I’d never done any kind of Mountain Marathon before and I assumed it would be less intense than a fell race, how wrong I was! I get really nervous before fell races and after much contemplation about why this is, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s fear of pain. In order to feel satisfied with my performance at the end, it’s really got to hurt at the time. For some reason I thought the pace in the MMM would be a bit more ..read more

Howgill Fell Race by Chris Curtis

2019 saw the Howgill Fell Race feature in the English Championships and a good turnout was guaranteed. The weather looked perfect with clear skies and a light breeze so what could go wrong? The clue should have been the fell race map, helpfully supplied on the Helm Hill website, which looks like a fun trip to the tops of most of the interesting hills in the area of Sedbergh. It helps if you read the description properly as that’s 2,000m of climb, not 2,000ft, as I was gleefully told on arrival. The route has been designed for as a rollercoaster of six leg-tearing climbs and a few additional li ..read more

Marmot Dark Mountains by Christopher Colla

I Had a great night with @giantarc running the short score Marmot Dark Mountains. It was our first Marmot Dark Mountain Race. I think our main pre race worry was clothing, as nearer the race it was looking to be warmer than planned (that odd middle ground where you start way too hot then eventually notice that you’re not). I was still undecided on which shoes to wear right up to setting off. I went with my salomonspeed2’s in the end as I have more experiences of wearing them for longer duration runs, they worked out well though did have to do quite a bit of mud surfing. We were both ..read more

A personal experience of the Borrowdale Fell Race – by Chris Curtis It is with some trepidation that I post my entry off for the Borrowdale and a mixture of happiness and dismay when it comes back as accepted.  Do they really think I can do it or are they desperate for numbers and happy to see me fall flat on my face (repeatedly)?  I think I’m fit enough but this is the Borrowdale: something I’ve been in awe off for many years, a Serious race for Serious fell runners. Rose – another Borrowdale newbie – and I go out for a recce which is partially successful and we learn a lot by where ..read more

Run-Bivvy-Run

By Natalie Hawkrigg My 2023 challenge was to sleep in a bivvy outdoors every month of the year in 2023.  I always like to have something that pushes me outside of my comfort zone. I’m not sure where the idea of the monthly bivvy came from, but sleeping out every month of the year felt like it would push my comfort zone, as well as give me some unique experiences through the different seasons. I purchased an Alpkit kit bivvy. I had never slept in a bivvy before so I wasn’t sure how warm or cold I would be or how comfortable. I decided for the first month of January that I would be close to ..read more

Angela Wilson Torridon what a place! I remember and will always remember the first time driving into the area with Paul, the view never fails to amaze me!! Mountains, ridges, and this time lovely blue skies.  We broke the six hour drive with a stop at Aviemore. Natalie is usually the planner behind our adventures and I contribute! This was my contribution- a bivvy alongside Loch Morlich. Natalie’s challenge (or one of) for the year is a monthly bivvy, I have promised to join her.  This was to be my first, her 5th for May. We eventually found the perfect spot, sheltered and on th ..read more

Leap Frog Relay

The Frog Graham Round takes inspiration from the Bob Graham Round, but adds open water swimming sections to take the contender on a 40 mile fell run interspersed with four lake swims. The challenge is daunting and committing and an incredible achievement for those who complete it. The idea of the Leap Frog relay, a bit like the Billy Bland relay (a Bob Graham relay), evolved from the joy of completing such an epic adventure, but as part of a team, making it more accessible and fun to share with friends or club mates. NFRC treasurer and Frog Graham round veteran Natalie Hawkrigg had dreamt up t ..read more

Angela Wilson Trust your compass, 6th April 2023. Northern Fells Running Club hold a navigation day every 2-3 years. It is a great chance for club members to come together and improve their navigation skills.  This year there were seven participants, hosted by Jenny and Steve at their home in Skelton, the first nav skills of the day finding it!!  Coffee and biscuits on arrival we got a start on our day.  1. We covered the different maps available ( 1:50 000, 1:40 000, 1:25 000, BMC/Harvey and race maps) 2. Map symbols 3. Grid references 4. Reading contours – telling up from dow ..read more
