How many parkruns can you run in 24 hours?
Men's Running magazine
by David Castle
1y ago
Every Saturday, at 9am, thousands of people run a lap or two of their local park, often meeting old friends and making new ones. For some, parkrun is a weekly, unmissable, ritual that keeps their mental health intact, for others, it’s the inspiration to wake up before 9am and set up their weekend, and for the rest, it’s a hangover cure. Whatever the reason, whatever the frequency, runners leave parkrun in a better place than when they started. But for most parkrunners one 5km a day is enough. Not for George Bullard and Nat Long. In an effort to highlight how many local parkruns are available ..read more

RACE REPORT: The Antrim Half Marathon
Men's Running magazine

As the alarm sounded at 5:45, bleary eyed I stowed my suitcase in the boot of mum’s car and after one last check of all the paperwork we were off to Gatwick. Bag drop was smooth and despite a small delay at security (I forgot to take my energy gels out of my carry-on before the x-ray scanner), it was a relaxed journey. I had a momentary panic at Belfast International Airport when I realised, I didn’t know how the transfer was going to work. Fortunately, someone appeared clutching a clipboard with Antrim Coast Half Marathon on it. There were a few others who’d come in on a flight from Birmingh ..read more

Author: Helen Gaunt Before every run or workout, we all know it’s important to warm up. But what’s the science behind it and what is the recommended way to prepare our body to its best advantage? Have you heard of the RAMP approach? This is a progressive, dynamic warm up whereby you Raise (the heart rate), Activate (the muscles), Mobilise (the joints) and Potentiate (the body’s neuromuscular system). By spending 10-15 mins preparing the body ..read more

In partnership with Fitbit Want to get the most from your 10K training and racing? Using a Fitbit Ionic: adidas edition will help you measure and track your progress Deciding to really go for a 10K is a bold choice. Run it flat out from the start and you’ll have legs like lead by halfway. Yet start off too slow and you won’t have the time to make amends later in the race. To run a great 10K you will need: A strong aerobic foundation and base endurance A decent turn of top-end speed The physical capacity to hold a high percentage of your maximum effort An economical and efficient style of runn ..read more

The LG Trail: 110km from Lausanne to Geneva
Men's Running magazine
by Iain Martin

“Are you going for a run?” The receptionist in my hotel looked genuinely confused as I headed out of the door in full running kit. After all, it was almost 11pm – a time when many young Genevois are only just starting their evening – but the 110km LG Trail from Lausanne to Geneva in Switzerland starts at unusual hour of 2am. Although relatively experienced at ultras, I’d never started a race in the middle of the night before. That presents its own set of unique challenges: when do you eat and sleep in the build up to the race? I considered taking a sleeping bag to the start, arriving early an ..read more

Why Zwift transforms treadmill running
Men's Running magazine
by David Castle

Treadmill running is a bit like Marmite – you either love it or you hate it. There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground. I even own a treadmill and yet, for months on end, it sits there, gathering dust and being used as an impromptu rack for drying washing. I’d always had a similar relationship with indoor cycling. It was anathema to me, a necessary evil that one does only when there are no possible alternatives. And then I discovered Zwift. It was my ‘eureka’ moment: suddenly I was transported in to a virtual world where I could train with other cyclists, all from the relative comfort of my ..read more

Bearhug Calf Sleeves

£35.99 https://getabearhug.com Runners can be a hard crowd to win over. Give them a carbon plated shoe and tell them it will shave seconds off their 10K personal best and they’ll bite your hand off; tell them that passive stretching after work outs will improve recovery and the response will be a trifle more sceptical. Enter compression wear. While the science behind compressive garments is well documented, getting the average runner to trade his Tracksters for full-length compression leggings has proved challenging. Fortunately, the compression sleeves market has fared much better with many ..read more
