I currently work in HR for a relatively large organization and I'm hoping to transition into technical writing, which I think has been unofficially a large portion of my job for the last 4 years. For some backstory, at the start of the pandemic, we implemented a new ATS and I created all the SOPs and user manuals for my team, which was probably about 35 different documents. I then was part of a team of 3 responsible for training new onboarding team members and reviewing and updating our processes as needed. The last 2 years I've spent as a SME helping with the design, user testing, build, tra ..read more

Organizational structure help

A client is asking for a rework of a content structure, but they insist on keeping Microsoft365 and Sharepoint. I mentioned that I have some base knowledge of Sharepoint, but not as a documentation tool. I also talked about my knowledge and use of wikis in the past and was immediately shot down as “those never get updated over the years”. Didn’t really get to mention about docs as code at all as they were very abrupt. I kinda sat back and wondered what it is they want as they mentioned automation etc. I guess I wonder how that would work in Sharepoint itself? Well outside my current wheelhous ..read more

Would you leave a new job over software?

I started a new job less than a year ago. A major part of taking the position was that my new company's documentation processes needed an overhaul. The writing itself wasn't going to be what I felt would help me develop my skillset, but rather instituting a new, efficient system for managing projects and documentation. The plan the entire time (even from the interview) was to switch from InDesign to MadCap Flare with GitHub to track changes and make different release management branches. I wanted to spend the first 6 months learning the company, the products, the document types, and anything ..read more

My small company is in a high-tech field, and it's important to keep the engineers focused on R&D. We have started working on government contracts and we've found ourselves recycling a lot of the same design information into different formats as we progress through the milestones of Phase I SBIRs. In past companies I've worked for, we had an amazing small team of technical writers who not only wrote proposals, but also wrote documentation. They were so good, that they also figured out how to heavily automate the production of documentation to the point that it was tied into our SolidWorks ..read more
