Mickalene Thomas’ current installation at The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach is inspired by a 1980s Polaroid photograph of the artist’s mother. Titled “Better Days,” the dazzling, immersive exhibit consists of two different spaces – a colorfully designed home and a glittering speakeasy – encapsulating Thomas’ artistic universe. In addition to five geometric-patterned mirror works and two collages by the artist, the show also features painting, photography and video by both established and up-and-coming artists, all curated by Thomas. While first appearing playful and humorous, Italian-born artist Lara Favaretto’s work is ultimately a statement on consumption, decay, loss and the passing of time. Her current exhibit “Blind Spot,” now showing at The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, brings together new and old work and also includes site-specific installations and one newly commissioned piece created for The Bass’ permanent collection. Perhaps the most striking of all pieces on display, the newly commissioned “Gummo VI” consists of five brilliantly colored automated car wash brushes dizzyingly twirling and wearing themselve ..read more

The Blackstone mirrors Chicago’s rich history. Set along South Michigan Avenue, across from Millennium Park and the blue shores of Lake Michigan, The Blackstone was originally a private mansion, built in the late 1800s by Timothy Blackstone, president of Union Stock Yards and the Chicago & Alton Railroad. Upon the man’s death in 1900, his widow sold the property, which was demolished in 1908 to make way for a magnificent new structure designed by illustrious Chicago architects Marshall & Fox. In April 1910, the work was completed and The Blackstone hotel was born, with opera star Enric ..read more
