Summer means time for vitamin D
Better Bones

With summer underway, it’s time to take advantage of the free vitamin D the sunshine offers. Sun exposure is the ideal way to help us reach the minimum vitamin D level of 32 ng/mL, with an optimum of 50 to 60 ng/mL. I also encourage you to get outdoors as much as possible because we are each a part of nature. Being outside can help bring our bodies in harmony with the natural world around us. I use this time of year to play golf and tennis, swim in the lake, bike, kayak, hike, grow vegetables and get outdoors any way I can. Even with all the benefits of being outside, I still get many question ..read more

Trabecular Bone Score and the Quest to Predict Who Will Fracture
Better Bones
by Dr. Susan E. Brown
6M ago
Each year 178 million new osteoporotic fractures occur worldwide. These fractures are painful, costly, and at times life-limiting. In the hope of preventing these fractures, medical systems around the world have looked for ways to identify those at greatest fracture risk. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the kidney energy meridian system is evaluated, as this is held to largely dictate bone health. In the 5,000-year-old Ayurveda Health Science of India those with an imbalance of the Air and Ether elements (known as Vata dosha) carry an increased fracture risk. Westernized countries have taken t ..read more

6 Tips for Weeding Your Mental Garden
Better Bones
by Dr. Susan E. Brown
10M ago
I love gardening, working the soil, planting tiny seeds, and watching them grow. A few weeks ago, while plucking crabgrass from the kale, I found myself thinking about my clients and their bone health concerns. I was entranced pondering the extent to which mental and emotional stress robs us of both happiness and bone health. Entertaining this thought, a “Garden–Life” metaphor sprung to mind. The metaphor was straightforward and applies to both backyard gardens and mental landscapes. The metaphor is, “Nourish the wanted, and weed out the unwanted.” Two weeks later, after attending Acharya Shun ..read more

Menopause and sleep disturbances impact biological aging
Better Bones
by Dr. Susan E. Brown

Most of us know from experience that tossing and turning at night means feeling rotten the next day. And many of us understand that there are long-term health consequences when we’re short-changed on sleep. But recently I found out something new from a fascinating study on sleep  and its effect on how fast postmenopausal women’s genes age – which is known as their “epigenetic age.” (Carroll et al. 2017) In the study, postmenopausal women with 5 insomnia symptoms were nearly 2 years older biologically than similar women with no insomnia symptoms. The more insomnia symptoms — waking up at n ..read more

Better Bones
by Dr. Susan E. Brown

“The foot feels the foot when it feels the ground.” – The Buddha Now that winter is finally over — after what seems like forever — more and more of us are getting outside and being active. It’s a time that I like to go for walks to watch the world wake up from its long sleep. Walking is one of the most useful exercises we have because it offers us so many key health benefits, as enumerated by many, many studies: Even one hour a week at the average pace reduce hip fracture risk by 6% in postmenopausal women, while walking for at least four hours a week was associated with a 41% lower ..read more

Dr. Brown’s 2023 Crystal Ball Predictions
Better Bones

Muscle testing will become as important as bone density testing as doctors understand the intertwined aging loss of both bone and muscle. “Everything Is Energy” will become a familiar concept and the popularity of energy medicines will surge. You will see more homeopathy, acupuncture, Qi Gong, Reiki, and many other treatments including Chakra balancing and even tuning of the invisible energy fields around the body. Researchers will discover how to turn sound into bone as they identify the vibrational frequency capable of turning stem cells into osteoblast bone-building cells. Worldwide there ..read more

By Cameron Vazquez, MPH For many years now, we here at the Center for Better Bones — as well as our clients! — have been singing the praises of weighted exercise vests and belts. And how can we not? Not only does weighted exercise equipment allow us to do less and accomplish more, but numerous studies have shown that weighted vests and belts can improve strength, balance, and muscle mass, halt bone loss, and even build bone! You can see all of these studies in our blog, Weighing In on Wearing Weights: How Weighted Vests and Weighted Belts Can Help You. So why are we talking about weighted exer ..read more

Fall 2022: MY Personal Appreciation Accounting
Better Bones
by Dr. Susan E. Brown

Here in the Northeastern US, Fall is a time of harvest and abundance. A season when we are naturally led to celebrate the generosity of Mother Earth and a time to collectively take a few deep breaths and give thanks for all that has enriched our lives in the past year. Gratitude lists are powerful health-promoting tools many of us practice daily. In addition, however, I like to do a seasonal “Appreciation Accounting” and would like to share my 2022 Appreciation Accounting with you. This accounting is not about the deep appreciation I hold for my friends, family, pets, and all the living world ..read more

The Alkaline Diet Preserves Muscle
Better Bones
by Dr. Susan E. Brown
1y ago
Muscle mass is a major predictor of quality of life and longevity. Aging muscle loss begins around age 30 and accelerates after 50. Both men and women lose 30 to 40% or more of their muscle with age, and, with poor health, one loses even more. Aging muscle loss can lead to reduced functional capacity, fall injuries, frailty, and excess mortality. The high-mineral, whole-foods Alkaline Diet has been proven to reduce aging muscle loss. Key muscle-protective, alkalizing nutrients include magnesium, potassium, buffered ascorbate, the carotenoids, quercetin, and many plant antioxidants. At-home pH ..read more
