Protestant Curious about Orthodoxy

Please bear with me this is going to be a bit of a long post but I need advice. I’ve been Protestant my whole life, and I’ve seen the work of the Triune God throughout my life. (I’m 20 currently) Recently though I’ve started to see interesting things in both Orthodoxy and Catholicism that might make become one of them one day. But recently, I don’t think my mental health has been the best, on top of the fact that I’ve been struggling with lust extra hard recently, and also not been too disciplined in my prayers and Bible reading, which has led to me being further from God and feeling disconne ..read more

I know this style of apologetics has its origin in Reformed Protestantism but I’ve noticed that some Orthodox utilize it in debates with atheists/agnostics. submitted by /u/Solidus_snake28 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How would you respond to this text from St. Irenaeus as an Orthodox Christian?

The following is an excerpt from St. Irenaeus (Against Heresies). He seems to explicitly state that it is of extreme importance to be in communion with Rome. Book III, 3.2. Since, however, it would be very tedious, in such a volume as this, to reckon up the successions of all the Churches, we do put to confusion all those who, in whatever manner, whether by an evil self-pleasing, by vainglory, or by blindness and perverse opinion, assemble in unauthorized meetings; [we do this, I say,] by indicating that tradition derived from the apostles, of the very great, the very ancient, and universally ..read more

Is it possible for a legit ordained priest to hold divine liturgy without a bishop?

VERY HYPOTHETICAL question. Sorry for my lack of mature understanding of EO. So if a priest were ordained 100% legit in a world Eastern Orthodox church, and the priest found out (I dunno) that his bishop was a drug addict and a closet Muslim (okay just bear with me here LOL), it would be terrible. Of course the proper action would be the priest go to another bishop and tell him (I get it). That said, if the priest were to go rogue (and have no bishop over him) and just hold liturgy in his own personal bought building, with no bishop, is it possible for him to still consecrate the Eucharist, p ..read more

Hi everyone I have a question. So I was baptized (well not baptized but christened) in the Protestant church. For a long time during my teenage years I was straying and losing faith, then I found Islam. I’m not sure what it is about the religion that made it so enticing to me, but im assuming it’s the devil that was trying to lead me off my path. I was obsessed with Islam and I loved the religion and wanted to convert. The only thing that stopped me was I found the whole renouncing Jesus for Mohammad thing super sketchy (i just wasn’t able to because of my christian upbringing) so i didn’t co ..read more

Can one pray (at home) while having nicotine patches (ex. zyn) in their mouth? Is it in any way disrespectful to the Lord? I’m a bit confused about this and I have no one to ask. I dont have a spiritual father or a priest to ask at the moment. submitted by /u/bucellarii [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

A very good friend of mine, who brought me to Orthodoxy, suggested I pray to Mother of God. although I am new to the faith, I am becoming a godfather this Saturday. In any case, I started praying to Theotokos daily and after buying a medallion of her and wearing it, I was released from many personal temptations. Anyone know if this is real or just a coincidence? I want to believe it’s real but have a hard time accepting St Mary can help or even wearing her image can? Should I continue to wear this or return it? This is what I bought. It’s similar to Lady of Fatima: https://www.treasuresofbyza ..read more
