Both attempts at growing Swift have been unsuccessful in my garden, mostly due to the mis-timing that appears to happen during pollination. Both attempts at growing what is often seen as this most reliable variety have resulted in the male flowers appearing a number of weeks before the silks emerge, therefore resulting in there being no male flowers available for pollination. One years growing Swift, we ..read more

Fig Diary
2023
Two surprise figs sent by Direct Plants to replace pistachios that had arrived with one of the twin male/female planting not alive. I had said just to send something that they had an overstock of, and to surprise me, and two healthy fig varieties arrived.
Towards the end of Autumn, they had produced a few pea-sized figs in bud, but they were not strong enough to go over winter.
Plants were left outside over the mild winter, but I’ll move them into the floppy greenhouse in future year ..read more

I was looking for something to satisfy my savoury craving, and decided I wanted something filling, and similar to the little pudla that I sometimes make up to accompany a meal. I made a quick batch of gram flour waffles, adding in some caramelised, finely chopped onion for the sweetness of an onion bhaji, as well as a few spices which wouldn’t overpower the taste and would also work as a side dish with the dinner I was preparing for the evening meal.

Parsnip Diary
2024
In an attempt to get more regulated spacing for my parsnips this year I am pre-germinating my seeds by soaking them in some warm water for an hour or two and then laying the seeds in some damp paper towel sealed in a plastic bag until the radical emerges. Once the seeds have started to germinate I will sow them using the seeding square into the deep root veg bed.

Calabrese Diary

March, Week 1
I have bought a small strip of cells of ready-planted Marathon F1 Calabrese from Dobbies for £2.99, which I chose over the seeds as the seeds, though far more numerous, were priced at nearly £5, and I decided to save myself the effort. I must look up the better sowing times for my brassicas ahead of next year as I always feel I am not sure when to sow this family of seeds.
