När Riksorganisationen UFO-Sverige bildades den 29 mars 1970 inleddes en unik era i svensk ufohistoria. Mängder av lokala ufoföreningar och mindre grupper bildades runt om i landet. De utvecklades på olika sätt både vad gäller aktiviteter och sätt att arbeta med ufofrågan. Tidigt ute var Stockholms UFO-Center (SUFOC) som bildades 1971. Den startade som en vanlig ufoförening men skulle efter ett par år utvecklas på ett ganska ovanligt sätt. Mellan 1976 och 1979 var Bevan (tidigare Thorvald) Berthelsen en mycket aktiv och dynamisk ordförande för UFO-Sverige. Medlemsantalet steg kraftigt under de åren, mycket tack vare de intensiva PR- och informationskampanjer som Bevan initierade. Ett fyrtiotal städer besöktes under 1975-76 där UFO-Sveriges stillfilm visades kombinerat med föredrag och frågestund. Resultatet blev att en mängd nya lokalgrupper bildades. Sommaren 1978 var det många semesterfirare som höjde på ögonbrynen när de passerade IKEAs parkeringsplats i Köping. Där stod ett stort flygande tefat, fem och en halv meter i diameter. Tefatsmodellen var ett effektivt sätt att locka besökare till den ufoutställning som arrangerades av Köpings UFO-förening i samarbete med Köpings museum.  Den som bodde i Bunkeflo socken, Malmö kommun, i slutet av 1950-talet kunde få ett överraskande besök i stugan. När det knackade på dörren visade det sig att det var socknens kyrkoherde som kom för att sälja böcker. Men det var inte kristen litteratur som salufördes utan böcker om flygande tefat, utgivna av förlaget Parthenon i Helsingborg. The usual and popular media image of an alien visitor is a small, spindly creature with large black eyes, often referred to as the Greys.
