In 1991, filmmaker and musicologist Harry Smith nibbled on his “just desserts” when he received a Grammy Award for contributions to American Folk Music. Harry, who never walked a blatant path or thought in a straight line, stumbled his way onto the stage to succinctly announce: “I’m glad to say my dreams came true. I saw America changed by music.” While Harry Smith knew that music to transform America, he couldn’t calculate his impact on culture—especially on the underground, art, and Portland scenes. More than 30 years later, we’ve just passed Harry’s centennial year, offering us a chance to ..read more

A door stands open on the beach, framing the incoming surf. This is the opening shot of the new video for “Energy” from Julia Logue, and also serves as the framing metaphor for the Portland singer’s most ambitious video to date. “Energy” is the penultimate track on Welcome To Your Sunrise, Logue’s debut record released just at the end of last year, and the song serves as the setup to the record’s titular closer, the dusky arpeggios building over a lurching beat, with Logue looking for a way through. Repeated throughout the song are the following lines, more mantra than hook: I don’t like what ..read more

It seems fitting that the sun was shining the day Brainstory came to town, one of the first late spring days in Portland that carries with it the faint tune of summer. Brainstory is a sunny band, unequivocally Californian, and sprawling into all the nuances of that descriptor, taking up the lineages of jazz, rock, soul, and r&b, drawn cross-country and baked together under the light of a psychedelic star. As the sun set, they took the stage at Mississippi Studios to the pause menu theme from Goldeneye N64 before launching into an opening jam, and then into “Listen,” the third track from th ..read more

Old Grape God digs in on EATING OVER THE TRASH

From the opening bars of EATING OVER THE TRASH, the new self-produced album from Old Grape God, the pressure is mounting. If you’ve been counting, it’s the Portland rapper’s staggering 41st release, and that number is itself a testament to the truth of the project’s emotional core, which is learning how to balance the external pressures of life by exerting equal and opposite pressure back outwards. For Old Grape God, that outward pressure is the act of creation, a positive force which allows the artist to maintain an equilibrium with their environment. If all the talk of unseen pressures soun ..read more
