The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) acts as adviser and arbiter for the zoological community by generating and disseminating information on the correct use of the scientific names of animals. Several million species of animals are recognised, and more than 2000 new genus names and 15,000 new species names are added to the zoological literature every year.
