Suggestions on men's shoe for social Viennese Waltz with tails

I'm a member for a social group that does Viennese Waltz. Dress code is tails for members and tuxedo for guests. For lessons, I'm still wearing the first pair of dance shoes I bought, but the heal is coming loose and it's time for a new pair. I'm thinking that I'd like to find a pair of shoes that would be appropriate with formal dress. Ideally, that would be a patent leather pump / loafer with a grosgrain ribbon or bow. Failing that, some sort of traditional patent leather Oxford with no toe cap, broguing, accent stitching, etc. So far, I've ended up wearing my formal shoes to dance in, whic ..read more

Going too often to my studio?

I recently started dancing at a Fred Estaire studio in November. Dance has always been a dream and passion of mine that unfortunately I had to take a break from for 10 years due to severe chronic illness. I am finally managing it and capable of pushing myself. My goals with dance are to really excel and learn as much as possible, with the intention of competing professionally. I take my lessons very seriously and am very eager to learn. I recently upped my private lessons to 4x a week including group classes and dance parties. I'm essentially at my studio every day. I feel a little socially a ..read more

Princess-like dress goes fully to the floor, wide, no one can dance with her. Could the same look be danceable?

I had been asked to help her learn to dance waltz. Her family was thrilled to see us gracefully traveling around the room with diverse variations in an hour. They asked me to dance with her at her quinceanera (party for turning 15). I arrived and saw her family trying to dance with her, but stepping on her dress. My turn: I eventually got us doing around the edge of the dance floor, but almost all our choreography was impossible. [Edit: I don't know if the dress restricted her movement, or just her partners'.] I presumed the family would tell the dress-maker she needs to be able to dance. Sho ..read more

Help with bust support in Ballroom dance costume

My husband and I are in a Ballroom showcase in October. While we're still picking a theme and therefore I don't have a specific costume in mind yet (though, we are leaning towards a latin dance), l'm running into some issues. The dresses, while gorgeous and fun, don't look like they will hold me in very well. I am a thicker girl who's very well endowed (maybe tmi but for reference, my bra cup is bigger than my head) and I am sceptical of the support these dresses will provide. Thus, I'm really considering making my own (I do have some experience sewing). I don't want to cop out (in my opinion ..read more

Learning to lead but I get lost on the floor and don't really know how much space figures take.

My partner and I have been taking lessons for about a year. We can now dance 8 styles without stepping on each other and being mostly correct and timely. Previously we've just been executing the routines which doesn't require much actual leading. But now we're at the point where I actually have to both lead and drive and I'm really bad at it. I have a hard time figuring out what to do next on the fly, I didn't know how much floor space various figures take, I nearly run into other dancers and the walls, etc. Basically, I'm stunting our progress and making it less fun for my partner. How can I ..read more

Learning to improvise

Hey everyone! I thought I might post this up on here since I've been rather curious on how to improve in it. Basically, I've been dancing Ballroom for around 2 years now and over that time I've grown quite used to routines to help me understand moves. What I find now however is that I feel I've become too accustomed to dancing a fixed routine that I struggle to improvise when I dance with someone and it's 'out of routine'. I don't really dance competively (definitely more of a social dancer) although I would like to enter that space someday. First, I wanna just be a good social dancer overall ..read more

I’m 19, and I really want to learn how to dance. I want to learn how to move beautifully and have fun. However, my body coordination isn’t the best and I can’t learn choreography at a fast pace. I have had a few dance classes (contemporary and hip hop) at my high school before, but i felt completely lost in those classes. Everything was gone through too fast and no explanation/ detailed steps were given to me. I left dance classes feeling confused, embarrassed and overwhelmed. I want to give dance another try though. How are ballroom classes in the beginning? Do they break down each step? Bal ..read more
