San Diego State’s Men’s NCAA Tournament rematch with Connecticut went the same as it did a year ago — only this time with a more decisive victory for the defending national champions. UConn used a first-half run to take control against the Aztec, and coasted in the second half to a 82-52 win in the Sweet 16. Brian Dutcher’s Aztecs program eliminated the top overall seed at this stage of the 2023 tournament but was unable to do so against the Huskies Thursday night in Boston. Danny Hurley’s program, though, advanced to the Elite Eight in the East Regional. UConn went on a 15-6 run early in the ..read more

Two hundred million dollars. That’s about how much the International Boundary and Water Commission needs to finish fixing and expanding its broken South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant in San Ysidro. “Our plant is currently not in compliance,” said IBWC commissioner María-Elena Giner. “This is a federal plant managed by the federal government that’s not meeting federal law.” The plant is supposed to clean 25 million gallons of raw sewage from Tijuana every day. It’s not. It’s one of the reasons why the Tijuana River Valley floods with trash and raw sewage. The plant was a large pa ..read more

On one block in Southcrest, NBC 7 spoke to two neighbors with similar stories: potholes and dips in the road costing them hundreds in car repairs. “It’s hard with my partner and I because then it’s like, well, we have one drivable car. To fix the other car is like $700 because of the dip,” Lorena Romero said. “Like, am I going to break a tire? You have to be super cautious, and it’s an extra thing that you don’t really want to do.” The San Diego City Auditor “found that the Street Maintenance Program has insufficient and unpredictable funding” and that $1.9 billion is needed over the next deca ..read more

Happy homecoming! Padres beat Giants on Opening Day at Petco Park
NBC 7 San Diego
by Derek Togerson

Small things count. Details matter. The 2023 Padres were not very good at doing the small things like moving runners up or working deep counts, and it kept them out of the playoffs last year. All throughout spring training, though, new manager Mike Shildt said the 2024 Padres were going to be better with the little stuff. Darnit if he wasn’t right. The Padres came from behind twice to beat the Giants 6-4 on Opening Day at Petco Park, and they did it with small ball. The Friars had nine hits and eight of them were singles. Oh, and their pitching staff is pretty good, too. Yu Darvish got the sta ..read more

He and another man were rescued that day; the bodies of two more were recovered Wednesday.
