To drop a design bomb
Marjolein in het klein

Just when you think the design is pretty much finished… your interior designer comes swooping in and drops a little design bomb, which turns everything upside down. Honestly, he did! But in a very good way. I asked Dennis Belle to help me shape the interior of my new house, especially the use of colors and materials. But Dennis went much further than that and came up with some super smart suggestions that make the interior design even better, building on the beautiful design that Menno had already made. Shall I show you the result? It will be my pleasure. At the end of October Dennis and I sp ..read more

What exactly is circular construction?
Marjolein in het klein
by Marjoleininhetklein

Sometimes it seems like the new buzzword in construction: circularity. The Olstergaard, the new neighborhood where I will live next year, is nature-inclusive and circular. Future residents are therefore expected to build their homes in a circular manner. But what does that actually mean? Why is circular construction such a good idea and how do you do it? What is circular construction? Circular construction is based on, surprise surprise, circularity. Circularity or the circular economy is based on a world without waste. Nice, huh? This means that we work with a closed raw material balance: th ..read more

Today the application for the environmental permit for my new Tiny House is done. Woohoo! Let me tell you, it took quite some work. Especially getting a correct BENG and MPG. But we did it, and today Woonpionier Menno is going to submit the application for me. With a bit of luck, I will have the permit at home in a few weeks and we can move forward! Doing the math How we arrived at a correct BENG and MPG calculation is quite a story. I will write a separate blog about it with the help of Patrick Dekker from ADEK Installatie Advies, because he made the calculations and was a humongous help. It ..read more

1001 choices

Having a Tiny House built may be a lot more manageable than a villa, but you still have to make a lot of choices. About anything and everything. 1001 choices from the smallest part (where in your loft do you want an outlet?) to the big choices (do you want to go off-grid or not?). Even if the design is largely finished, you are not there yet. Ha! No, that’s where the fun starts. I am now in the interior design phase and boy, do I have a lot to choose from! What a luxury indeed :) The choice of building materials, choice of installations, choices of orientation of my house on the plot and so on ..read more

The kitchen: the heart of my new home
Marjolein in het klein

Every house has a heart. A place where people are seemingly automatically drawn towards. Where it feels good; where life is present. Which place that is depends on the residents, although I think that some houses have such a center, such a heart themselves. For me, the kitchen is one of the most important places in the house. So naturally the kitchen will become the heart of my new house, perhaps even more than in my old house because of the lay-out. The prospect of decorating it makes me so excited! :) My new house will be a little bigger. I’m going from 2.55 to 3.50 meters wide (outer size ..read more

Green neighborhoods on the rise
Marjolein in het klein

Green, ecological neighborhoods are on the rise in the Netherlands. Neighborhoods of the future, where the starting point is that we have to relate to nature in a different way. Nature-inclusive, circular, with a great eye for biodiversity, native plants, climate resilience and with a diversity of houses. Not unimportant: Tiny Houses are welcome there! In addition, these projects are often set up in such a way that they are socially sustainable and promote connection between the residents. They really are the neighborhoods of the future in my opinion. In this blog I would like to put a few exa ..read more

The big impact of light on small spaces

I have been living for a week and a half in a temporary house — an apartment next to my parental home. The place is a bit of a ‘pipe drawer’, with few windows and therefore, fairly dark. What a difference with my light Tiny House! It makes me realize how important light is for your mood and how it makes a small space seem bigger. Fortunately, my new Tiny House will also be a wonderfully light house. Just to be clear: I’m very happy that I can live here temporarily and I’m totally fine with it. It doesn’t make me depressed that I see less light, but a shortage of light does something to you ei ..read more

Farewell sweet house

It’s done. I’ve moved. I’m homeless. I’m living with my mother again. What a strange idea! The past few days have been very intense, both physically and emotionally. I never thought it would be so much work, moving out of a Tiny House. But luckily, I had help from dear friends. And how great it is that I can temporarily live in the apartment next to my parental home. Thank you, Mom! Saying goodbye to my first Tiny House was a kind of grieving process. Yes, of course I chose to sell this house, and yes, there will soon be a fantastic new Tiny House in its place. But that does not alter the fac ..read more

My favorite crockpot recipe
Marjolein in het klein

In the Grote Tiny House Podcast epidose 13 Natasja and I appealed to our listeners to send in their favorite recipes. We would then turn it into a PDF Tiny House cookbook. Well, that didn’t happen; apparently, there is no need for it. Hahaha! We have received exactly one recipe. ;) But I don’t want to deprive you of my favorite recipe, which is a crockpot dish. And while we’re on the subject of cooking in a Tiny house, I would like to advocate the crockpot. In other words: the slow cooker. Almost every Tiny House is equipped with solar panels. And what do you have in the summer? That’s r ..read more

In preparation for the tiny move

The date has been set. I am going to hand over my beloved Tiny House to her new owner on September 11th. The preparations for the tiny move are in full swing! Now you may wonder: “what’s there to move if you live tiny?” But that might surprise you. Outdoor stuff Although I don’t have a lot of stuff in the house, over the course of the five years that I’ve lived here, some stuff has accumulated outside the house as well as inside. Like a woodshed, for example, where I store my firewood. That’s just a cubic box on its side with a roof on top, under which the chickens also like to shelter when it ..read more
