It took the A’s awhile to get Mason Miller a lead on Friday night, but it was worth the wait. Abraham Toro doubled home the tying run in the top of the ninth inning, and Brent Rooker’s double scored Shea Langeliers from first base with two out in the top of the 10th before Miller did the rest in the A’s 3-2 comeback win at Camden Yards. 49ers close NFL Draft’s second round with trade, then take defensive back Green
Marin Independent Journal: Breaking News, Sports, Business, Entertainment & San Rafael News
by Cam Inman

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers finished out the NFL Draft’s second round Friday night by first swinging a trade — not involving one of their heralded wide receivers — before drafting defensive back Rendardo Green in the No. 64 overall slot. Their third-round pick is slated for the 94th-overall slot, with six slots ensuing before a break until Saturday’s final rounds. A run on offensive tackles presumably prompted the 49ers to ship the No. 63 spot to the Kansas City Chiefs, thus moving the Niners down one slot for Green. As part of that deal, the 49ers acquired a fifth-round pick (No. 173 overall) and ..read more

SAN FRANCISCO – Standing near the first base line on a blustery Friday afternoon and across from the Giants dugout that Pirates catcher Joey Bart intermittently called home for four seasons, the former top pick recalled the whirlwind experience of being traded in April. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi “called me, and I was obviously excited to get to Pittsburgh and meet these guys, but at the same time, it’s just different,” Bart said. “You’ve been somewhere for so long and things happen so fast that right now, it’s about getting caught up.” Bart, 27, said he had a “weird ..read more

Marin agency resets school crossing guard sites
Marin Independent Journal: Breaking News, Sports, Business, Entertainment & San Rafael News
by Adrian Rodriguez

Fewer school crossing guards will be posted in San Rafael, Corte Madera and Novato in the fall. The board governing the Transportation Authority of Marin approved a plan Thursday to scale back the number of crossing guard sites to the original threshold of 96 at the start of the new school year in order to preserve the longevity of its $2.2 million program. Another reduction to 85 or fewer sites could be made in 2026 if staff can’t find more funding to sustain the same number of guards as program expenses continue to rise. The popular crossing guard program has supporters, some of whom wrote l ..read more

SANTA CLARA — Ricky Pearsall Sr. clutched an official NFL football in his right arm, an initial memento from the 49ers upon his son’s arrival Friday at Levi’s Stadium as this year’s first-round draft pick. “This came from the locker room,” beamed the proud father. “They said, ‘Go ahead, take it.’ I said, ‘All right, a little present for Dad.’ ” That Wilson football is supersized compared to what father and son played catch with 20 years ago: Skittles. “I have a funny story about that,” the elder Pearsall told this news organization after his son’s media meet-and-greet. “So, he was pretty young ..read more

Tiburon has closed the deal on a waterfront property purchase from the Richardson Bay Sanitary District. Escrow on the property at 510 Tiburon Blvd. went through on April 19. The district sold it to the town for $573,704.05. While final plans for the retired water retention ponds are unknown, the purchase expands the town’s open space by 32,820 square feet. “Tiburon has always been interested in acquiring that property because it is surrounded by our parks,” Town Manager Greg Chanis said. “It’s a very significant purchase for the town and we’re very excited about it.” Chanis said the purchase ..read more

Marin tennis teacher marks 50 years of ‘effortless’ effects
Marin Independent Journal: Breaking News, Sports, Business, Entertainment & San Rafael News
by Keri Brenner

It all started in 1974 at the Williamsburg Inn in Williamsburg, Virginia. Brent Zeller, then a junior at the nearby College of William and Mary and a member of its tennis team in his freshman year, went to the inn and taught his first tennis class. It’s also the year when “The Inner Game of Tennis,” a book by Timothy Gallwey, came out. Zeller, like many who read the Gallwey bestseller, spent the next 50 years developing his own “inner game” — not just about tennis, but also about life. About 39 of those years were in Marin. “By working together instead of competing against each other, great th ..read more

Another View: Decline in American life expectancy harms more than our health
Marin Independent Journal: Breaking News, Sports, Business, Entertainment & San Rafael News
by Céline Gounder, Craig Spencer
6h ago
American life expectancy started dropping even before the pandemic. It’s a critical barometer of our nation’s health and a sign that all is not well in the U.S. Much of the increase in preventable, premature death is attributable to drug overdose, which increased five-fold over the last couple decades. But this malaise is far broader, driven largely by growing chronic illness. Rates of depression are reaching new highs. Obesity rates among adults have risen from 30% to 42% since the turn of the century, with severe obesity nearly doubling and driving up the risk of cardiovascular disease, diab ..read more
