PHILADELPHIA — A difficult situation for the Giants turned disastrous not long into Saturday’s game against the Phillies.
Already without their starting catcher, they lost their No. 2 backstop in the second inning.
Barely 24 hours after Patrick Bailey suffered a concussion, forcing him to the injured list before first pitch Saturday, his backup, Tom Murphy, was forced to exit when he appeared to injure his leg while chasing after a pitch in the dirt from reliever Mitch White.
The Giants have not announced the reason for Murphy’s departure.

A trio of Marin runners — Kentfield’s Jeanne Lavin and Sister Marion Irvine and Leslie McMullin of San Rafael — are heading to Olympia, Washington for the 40th anniversary celebration of the very first Women’s Olympic Trials Marathon.
It was an epic struggle to add a women’s marathon to the Olympic Games. In 1980, the longest Olympic race for women was just 1,500 meters. But a determined group of activists succeeded in placing the 26.2-miler into the 1984 Games, to be held in Los Angeles.
Olympia, partly because of its name, won the right over much larger bidding cities to hold the Trials, whi ..read more

After a standout running career at then-Drake High and Occidental College, San Anselmo’s Brody Barkan ran his first Dipsea Race in 2019.
“I loved how historic and community-oriented the Dipsea was,” Barkan said.
Since that time, a seed was planted in Barkan’s head to try and create a community event for track. The idea for the Marin Mile came to him last year and will come to fruition on June 1.
“A great part about this is that the Dipsea or a 5K or a 10k can be long — intimidating for a new runner,” Barkan said. “Anyone can wrap their head around four laps around the track.”

The current state of young people’s mental health is dire. Amid their staggering rates of anxiety, depression and deaths from suicide and drug overdoses, the U.S. surgeon general declared a youth mental health crisis in 2021 and identified an epidemic of loneliness in 2023, with young people among those at highest risk.
Why is this happening? From our perspectives as a scholar of education and as a parent, one key source of the problem is the profound shift in our public schools — from their origins in the early 19th century as community institutions serving the public good to their transforma ..read more

Park’s funding shortfall is directly related to ranches
I am sympathetic to the concern for the budgetary health of Point Reyes National Seashore, as expressed by Jerry Meral in his recently published Marin Voice commentary (“Lack of income is pushing Point Reyes National Seashore into disrepair,” April 24). His proposed parking fees are modest. However, I don’t understand why he separates the money issues in the park from the ongoing ranch controversies.
First, two problems mentioned in the article — erosion and invasive plants — can be attributed as being partly caused by ranching. A third i ..read more

A Los Angeles County Superior Court has just ruled that Senate Bill 9 is unconstitutional. That legislation, which was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, allows existing property owners to ministerially split real estate parcels into four different homes.
It was the so-called end of “single family zoning.” Among SB 9’s co-authors are San Francisco’s “Mr. Housing,” Sen. Scott Wiener and Marin/Sonoma state Sen. Mike McGuire.
The petition, “City of Redondo Beach vs. Attorney General Rob Bonta,” was filed by the Southern California municipalities of Redondo Beach, Carson, Torrance, Whittier and Del Mar ..read more

Marin Academy defeated rival San Domenico, 7-2, on Friday night at Albert Park, scuttling the Panthers’ hopes of locking down an automatic berth in the Bay Counties League playoffs.
“We wanted to get them again,” said San Domenico senior Alex Tavano, whose Panthers beat Marin Academy 8-6 on Tuesday. “That’s not the way we wanted tonight to go.”
San Domenico (6-9, 4-6) needed a win after Wednesday’s 17-0 loss to Stuart Hall to secure the fourth and final BCL playoff berth.
Stuart Hall’s 9-2 loss to Urban on Friday, paired with San Domenico’s loss to Marin Academy, leaves the Panthers and Knight ..read more
