Colin Puckett is bound for Ohio State next season, but he and his senior classmates left Marin Catholic with a gift before parting as the Wildcats claimed their first North Coast Section Division I boys lacrosse title. Puckett and Harrison Tyler scored three goals each to lead top-seeded Marin Catholic to a dominating 14-3 victory over No. 3 De La Salle in Thursday’s championship in Kentfield. “We knew what we wanted from the start of the season. We want the MCAL and NCS titles, and if we didn’t get them, it wouldn’t be the season we wanted,” said Puckett, who had three assists. “We were fight ..read more

The University of California Board of Regents is planning to require UCLA to “contribute” $10 million annually to Cal’s athletic department in the aftermath of the conference realignment that separated the sister campuses, according to a summary of the upcoming meeting at UC Merced on the regents’ website. That is the maximum amount agreed upon by the regents in late 2022, after UCLA’s announced departure to the Big Ten placed the Pac-12’s future, and Cal’s athletic revenue, at risk. Since then, Cal’s situation has become more fraught. The Pac-12’s collapse in August 2023 forced the Bears (and ..read more

The North Marin Water District is taking another look at where it could build a new water pump station, a project that has roiled residents in a Novato neighborhood. The district’s board, which met Tuesday, voted unanimously to study one or two additional sites to construct its new primary pump station designed to replace the nearly 60-year-old one near Lynwood Elementary School. The vote authorized staff to amend the district’s consulting agreement with Freyer and Laureta Inc. to add $72,000 for services and an $8,000 contingency. The new contract total is $480,000. The duration of work has b ..read more

49ers rookies arrive: RB Guerendo ready to make quick first impression in NFL

SANTA CLARA – Isaac Guerendo stood still in his red size-12 sneakers as reporters interviewed him Thursday for the first time at Levi’s Stadium, his new home. From here on out, those feet could be among the fastest to put on a 49ers uniform and race through defenses. Six years ago, Guerendo crossed the finish line first in the 100-yard dash to win an Indiana state championship for Avon High School, where his football coaches used him as a wide receiver rather than an NFL-bound running back. “I always wanted to play in the NFL, but there came a point when I was younger where I wasn’t highly rec ..read more

Barry Tompkins: The ebbs, flows, and woes of Bay Area baseball

The great Bill Walsh once pointed out to me that there are certain teams in every sport you watch that regardless of any situation, you somehow know they are going to win. One of Bill’s players, Randy Cross, said that with Joe Montana in the huddle, everybody on the team knew that someway, regardless of the scoreboard, something was going to happen, and “we’d win.” I heard that same sentiment from Oakland Raider’s players when Ken Stabler was their quarterback. I get the same feeling from the current NBA Minnesota Timberwolves; and I get it from those dreaded L.A. Dodgers, too. The opposite is ..read more

Kurtenbach: 3 up, 3 down from the SF Giants’ brutal road trip — was the hype unjustified?
Marin Independent Journal: Breaking News, Sports, Business, Entertainment & San Rafael News
by Dieter Kurtenbach

Well, that could have gone better. The Giants’ longest road trip of the season — a 10-game, 10-day stretch in Boston, Philadelphia, and Denver — felt downright interminable. Only winning three games in 10 chances will do that. Not great, Bob (Melvin)! Yes, the worst road trip to watch since the 2012 Seth Rogan, Barbra Streisand feature “The Guilt Trip” was, in all, a deeply inauspicious stretch for the black and orange — one that raises serious questions about this team’s chances to compete for the postseason, and all that preseason optimism. But it wasn’t all bad. Here are three ups, and ..read more
