Researchers in Australia have made a big discovery: a super-sized species of trapdoor spider found only in Central Queensland. The arachnid has been dubbed Euoplos dignitas, a name “derived from the Latin dignitas meaning dignity or greatness, reflecting the impressive size and nature of the spider,” scientists with the Queensland Museum said in a statement. The spider lives in open woodland habitats and builds its burrows in the black soils of the Brigalow Belt in Central Queensland, which is on the northeastern coast of Australia. Shards of window glass fell from a high-rise in San Francisco Tuesday afternoon as high winds whipped through the city, a supervisor said. This snow season in the Sierra Nevada has been one for the record books. As of Monday morning at the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab, 677 inches – nearly 56-and-a-half feet – of snow had fallen since Oct. 1, making this the second snowiest season in the nearly 80-year history of the lab.
