Betting, a long-standing form of entertainment globally, has undergone a radical transformation over the past few decades, transitioning from physical bookmakers to online platforms. Today, almost every conceivable sport – from football and tennis to more niche ones like eSports – is available for betting. However, one sport seems conspicuously absent or underrepresented: cycling. This article aims to shed light on why cycling betting is less prevalent compared to other sports on bookmaker sites. Cycling’s Unpredictability One significant reason for the rarity of cycling bets lies in the sport ..read more

Last week I posted a video featuring some highlights from the six years I spent travelling around the world on a bicycle, and it was predictably dominated by the people I met and cycled alongside. But it wasn’t all shits and giggles. In the name of balance, I’ve put together another film about the more gruelling times. Here’s something from the darker side… The post For the sake of balance… first appeared on Cycling the Six ..read more

In this world, few things exist alone, unworried by and remote from the rest. When heavy rains and gusts ripped through India’s eastern seaboard and cyclone Hudhud was christened as such, the sun was shining over Nepal, hikers were pounding Himalayan trails in peak season and nobody rued the interconnections of this world. Not yet, anyway. As Indian police began the evacuation of 400,000 people on the Bay of Bengal coast Mike and I were beginning to bike-pack the Annapurna Circuit: a trial most often the realm of hikers (over 20,000 of them yearly). The trail scoots round the Annapurna range ..read more

Apologies if you’d been expecting my monthly update and got radio-silence… It was the first time I’ve missed a blog post in the last seven years. My excuse is that I’ve been embroiled in all manner of projects since coming back and the blog had to take a back seat. But I will continue to post here. Last weekend I was at the exciting Cycle Touring Festival giving a presentation about my world ride as well as a number of how-to talks, alongside superstars of the cycle touring world. It was a lot of fun. For Londoners – I’m speaking again at an Explorers Connect event on Thursday 16th June in the ..read more

As it turns out, cycling six continents is a particularly savage way to prove the quality of gear. Things have been fraying and snapping and dissolving, and once, actually exploding. I’ve been busily tossing kit confetti-like into the world’s various dustbins. There’s not much left. Three things actually – My bicycle, a Craghoppers base t-shirt which I have developed a kind of profound friendship with and will sew and patch up and coddle like a comfort blankey until England, and a ‘sleeping bag’ – in bold inverted commas because sometimes I wake up to a scene that evokes a (victorious) fight w ..read more

Yangon retreated, streets bled slowly of traffic and people, as I pedaled north with my friend Al, a TV camera crew and a thundering headache from a cheap and pesticide-scented red wine I’d knocked back the night before, or so I thought. When Al and the camera crew peeled off a fever kicked in, chased by diarrhoea of a Hiroshima quality and my hangover theory faded with the urban clutter. The murdered chicken made into Yangon street food was wreaking revenge, and its target was my intestines and Burma’s roadside foliage. By dusk I was a tremulous train wreck of a man, but I found the owner of ..read more

Home is an exciting, alarming, and chilly two months away. The homecoming is set, come down if you’re free: Friday 19th February at lunch time. Warning – there may be any or all of the following: gratuitous fist pumping, tears, mute confusion, complete psychological breakdown. Or I might just ponder the amassed friends and family from the perspective of Westminster Bridge and do an about-turn. I’ve never been to Chad. I’m in Belgrade now and delighted to be back in Europe again – though there is much to lament about leaving Asia, I’m relishing the quiet roads and the voluptuous curve ..read more
