Severe Weather Watch Coming Soon
The Alabama Weather Blog
by Bill Murray

The SPC and NWS Birmingham are both saying a severe weather watch will be coming soon. It likely will be a severe thunderstorm watch. The airmass over Alabama is very unstable, with CAPEs approaching 4,000 joules/kg. The bulk speed shear is high, and when combined with robust updrafts, can lead to significant severe weather. SPC maintains an “enhanced risk” (level 3/5) of severe thunderstorms, mostly for the potential of damaging straight line winds. An isolated tornado or two can’t be totally ruled out. New thunderstorm initiation should begin in the 7-8 p.m. time frame, w ..read more
