BOSTON (CBS) — It is classic New England. Summer never just gradually arrives here. More often than not, it creeps up from behind and smacks you right in the face. This May started out with 11 of the first 12 days below average. The weekends were rather crummy and warm weather lovers were starting to get ornery and downright impatient. Then, late last week, we flipped the switch and haven’t looked back. We have had 4 straight days in the 70s and 80s (Tuesday will make 5) and all of a sudden, we are thinking a top ten warmest May on record is within reach! We even set a new high-temperature rec ..read more

BOSTON (CBS) – We are in for a terrific week of weather in New England. It would be nice to get some rain tonight, as it has been a dry stretch and there isn’t much in the forecast ahead. The WBZ Weather Team has issued a NEXT Weather ALERT for the risk of thunderstorms this evening. (CBS Boston graphic) A strong cold front is approaching from the west during the day on Monday and will bring severe thunderstorms to a lar ..read more

BOSTON (CBS) — Huge “heads up” for Sunday night… we have the opportunity to see a total lunar eclipse. In fact, the entire eastern half of the US will be in the “path of totality,” providing a great show. The biggest caveat — the weather HAS to cooperate. (WBZ-TV Graphic) So what is an eclipse and how frequent is it? An eclipse is when one celestial body is darkened by another’s shadow. Lunar eclipses occur when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow created by Earth. Partial lunar eclipses are fairly common, but total eclipses are a bit hard to come by. This one is lining up perfectly for ..read more

BOSTON (CBS) — Huge “heads up” for this weekend. . . We have an opportunity to see a total lunar eclipse Sunday night! In fact, the entire eastern half of the country will be in the “path of totality,” assuring a great lunar show as long as the weather cooperates. This will be our first chance to see a total lunar eclipse here since January of 2019! First off, the basics: A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon are lined up. The Moon simply moves into the Earth’s shadow created by the sun. Depending on where you live and the timing of the eclipse, some get to see the whole show whi ..read more

BOSTON (CBS) – I believe it is a popular misconception around here that “we don’t have a spring.” How many times have you heard someone say, “we just jump right from winter into summah!” I guarantee you will hear it (or perhaps say it yourself) later this week. The sad reality is that spring, in general, kind of stinks here in New England. Put it up against the other seasons and I believe it is either third or fourth in line. Of course, this is totally my opinion, and I am sure there are plenty who would disagree. However, most years spring in the Northeast is cool, cloudy and rainy with a few ..read more

BOSTON (CBS) — Don’t get me wrong. . . I love New England. But, sometimes living here can really test your limits. For my money, no season is as mentally challenging here as spring. You make it through a LONG winter, the birds start chirping again, heck maybe you even started mowing the lawn! Perhaps you are thinking about a weekend barbeque or hitting a Sox game. Then you look at the 7 day forecast. . . you gotta be kidding me. (WBZ-TV graphic) Clouds for days. Off and on rain and drizzle. Highs in the 40s and 50s. This is nothing new – it happens each and every year at this time. While the ..read more

BOSTON (CBS) — It’s been a while. . . Thus far, 2022 has been a down year for meteor showers. Other than the less than impressive Quadrantid shower in early January, we have been shut out in the nighttime sky. Finally, Thursday night, we have a legit shot at seeing some shooting stars! Tonight’s meteors are known as the Lyrids. The Lyrids have been around for centuries and are generally not known to be one of the better or brighter shows. More often than not, they tend to produce mainly faint meteors with just an occasional bright burst. (WBZ-TV graphic) Tonight also comes with some other co ..read more

BOSTON (CBS) — Boston managed to hit 70 plus degrees at least three times last week (the first 70 degree days of the year)! After a weekend with some ups and downs, the weather looks smooth sailing for Marathon Monday. However, if you have travel plans Monday night into Tuesday, you may want to hold off if you can. Our next weather system will be approaching with everything from heavy rain, elevation snow, strong winds and the potential of some minor coastal flooding. (WBZ-TV Graphic) Monday will be dry and really fantastic for the Marathon. High clouds will move in through the day and after ..read more
