A five-story vacant building in Van Nuys that had long been covered with graffiti was finally cleaned up this week when a cleanup crew painted over the defaced building. Local residents say they’re pleased to see the building get a fresh coat of paint to cover up a multi-story eyesore on the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Gault Street, a block south of Sherman Way. Now, they’re hoping to stop the graffiti – and a homeless encampment in the vacant lot adjacent to the building – from returning. “If you saw the building, you wouldn’t even recognize it from a week ago. Los Angeles Daily News
by Luca Evans

LOS ANGELES — Gus Cordova didn’t kill anybody. That is the inarguable truth. A horde of faceless voices across the nation still claim attempted murder, the reputation he can’t escape. Cordova announced Tuesday night that he had fully shut down his recruitment, a sworn loyalty to a USC program that has been nothing but kind, according to his mother Shane. And his future beckons, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end commit in USC’s class of 2025 with a mean burst off the edge. For now, though, he doesn’t much leave his house in Lake Travis, Texas. He didn’t go to prom this junior year. His Twitte ..read more

Are tiny homes a cost-effective solution for homelessness? This nonprofit thinks so
Los Angeles Daily News
by Ethan Varian

DignityMoves CEO Elizabeth Funk thinks that for the most part, the public agencies and nonprofits tasked with solving homelessness are going about it all wrong. From the federal government on down, the focus — and the funding — has long centered on moving homeless people directly into permanent housing. The problem with that strategy, as Funk sees it, is there simply aren’t enough affordable homes available, and building new units takes years and can cost $1 million per door. DignityMoves’ solution: temporary tiny home shelters, which can be erected in months for as little as $50,000 a unit. S ..read more
