We wandered into a big, old, baroque church in New Orleans, where we admired the shrine, and the ornate carvings of its walls and ceilings, then went to sit in the courtyard garden. From this peaceful haven amid city noise, amid the southern palms trees and magnolia, this poem about the patriarchal nature of churches sprang out, taking me by surprise.

I believe Maud Gonne deserves public honor from Dublin for her social and political achievements yes, but her statue is particularly timely now. She embodies the sort of objections those in power use to keep out those who are different--female, queer, colored, disabled or outsidered in some other way.
