What Camera Do We Use?

Secondary only to questions related to teaching toddlers to snowboard, the title to this blog post is our other most asked question, and because we currently record with 5 different devices depending on the situation the answer is not always simple. I intend this to be a thorough explanation of what camera’s we use, why we chose them and how and when we use them so that I can start linking to this article rather than typing long winded responses to each inquiry. You can find our most up-to-date videos and photos using these cameras on OUR INSTAGRAM. The cameras we use and the order we will go ..read more

Cabin Life: Elevated

Samantha and I have traveled the pacific North-West and beyond documenting small, unique spaces the likes of yurts, fire lookouts, rustic cabins and tiny houses, the latter of which we even built and lived in ourselves so when we discovered a gentleman building a one of a kind structure he called the ‘tree-frame’ in Washington state we knew we had to experience it. This brand new Pacific North-West cabin has been elevated to another level, literally, nestled between and supported by the tall evergreens along the North Fork of the Skykomish river of Index, WA. Precariously ..read more

“Do you have any tips for getting a young toddler on a snowboard?” This post is a long winded answer to the above question, which we are asked almost every single day and we’re here to tell you that not only is it possible but incredibly rewarding. Our daughter started riding the chairlift with her own board at 18 months old and is now in the midst of her third full season at three years old. The best part is, she is the one requesting to snowboard every week and we’re now riding more than we did before having kids. The title to this blog post is probably inaccurate. Just like when we de ..read more

BEFORE <— SLIDE —> AFTER Ever have one those weekend projects turn into a multi-month project…? Yea, us too. It wasn’t until I began to finally compile this blog post that I was able to grasp the entire scope of this eighteen month long project that began before our second child was ever conceived and is just now finished as he begins to crawl.  In fact it feels like every project we do inside this 107 year old home begins growing exponentially for a variety of reasons. This project we are about to share with you technically began when we bought this house, two and a half years a ..read more

PRETEXT: A Day for Jake This Friday, March 13, Aubrin and I will travel to the Summit at Snoqualmie to participate in the global ‘A day for Jake’ event, celebrating the life and legacy of Jake Burton Carpenter, whose contributions to snowboarding helped pave the way for the lifestyle our family loves. I say lifestyle, because while having all of the prerequisites of a sanctioned sport, now in the Olympics, the roots of snowboarding that I hold onto are far deeper and more personal; an omnipresent life shaping force I will forever be thankful for. I grew up on the East coast in a suburb of ..read more

Tiny House Stepping Stone

We now live in a little 106 year old farm house in our favorite historic neighborhood of the Yakima Valley, but we took a circuitousness route to get here and our current existence is, and continues to be, inextricably linked to our tiny house. Before we ever bought a traditional home, we built (and lived in) a tiny home. That experience and the resulting benefits were invaluable, preparing us with the skills, finances and mental perspective (and perseverance) to tackle the home buying and renovation process. If we had to do it all over again, we wouldn’t change a thing. The time we invested ..read more

“Samantha and I built this home with our own hands, start to finish and are now sharing it with you. It is not a flawless experience but it is a memorable one.” That is what I wrote on our Airbnb listing in anticipation of our three month trial period in which we would be sharing our personal space with strangers from all over the country. We had no idea whether it would be a complete flop, sure fire success or total disaster. We hoped to have it occupied for a minimum of eight nights a month and considered the experiment a financial success if we hit fifteen nights per month; something we co ..read more

This post is unique in that I am essentially transcribing it directly from our PERSONAL INSTAGRAM FEED in which we have been sharing the day to day adventure of a family road trip through Central Oregon over the last week; post by post. While I think you’ll appreciate the following adventure as much as Aubrin did (which includes two ‘tiny houses’) if you would rather read our most recent writings about SHED tiny house you can find them in the newest issue (#78) of TINY HOUSE MAGAZINE. We were honored to be invited to contribute and wrote an article we think a lot of people considering a tiny h ..read more
