I’ve been thinking about entryways lately…. Not for myself, I think my entryway(s) are functioning pretty well, except for the constant pestering my family (including myself) to put our shoes away. I have been repeating to myself lately… “don’t put it down, put it away”. It’s really helping me ..read more

Splitting the Kids Room with a Shelving System

When we found this gem of an apartment with the long dark, low ceiling’d “second bedroom” (in quotes because it is technically a den, not a second bedroom, or maybe our bedroom is considered the den, either way…); I immediately saw that this room could be split in two. over 3 years later we finally did ..read more

I often talk about how lighting can have a huge impact in a small space. But sometimes wiring or outlets just don’t cooperate, especially in rentals or older homes. That’s where one of my favourite concepts comes in: portable lamps ..read more

So I have explained before that sharing a small bathroom with 4 people is one of the more challenging parts of small living. Our current bathroom is smaller than our previous bathroom but we make it work! And with some clear communication, not locking doors and less is more mentality, we share this small room pretty well. I am still always looking to maximize the space we have and use it more efficiently ..read more

A reader suggested that we do the similar crowd sourcing technique that we did for my laundry conundrum. What a great idea! I wanted to share an update about putting the kid’s artwork in a book. I shared about it in my previous posts HERE, HERE , and HERE and have been really happy to see that others have been trying it out. I received notes about using the same process to save postcards and love notes between partners (awe!) or documenting a grandma’s handmade quilts for her (tears!). I love how creative you all have gotten with photo-documenting and printing these magazines. Sharing an update on the kid’s art books as i find it’s good to remember that this is a great solution to cherish the kid’s creative work ..read more

Maintaining Your Things

This past week our car broke down, our front door handle broke and our faucet started leaking. Everything was repairable but it did feel like a flurry of failures that needed our attention beyond normal life responsibilities. All of these repairs took time and money. And all I could think is how do I simplify my life so I’m not spending time maintaining and repairing things?! But maybe the more constructive thought is, how do I fill my life with fewer things that I don’t mind maintaining and repairing? I had to get a new door handle to access our home and we had to pay for a car repair. We h ..read more

Dreamy minimalist dining room In all my years of writing this site, this is the first time I inadvertently deleted this original post. So I have tried to capture it in it’s original format. I looked to my friend from afar, Kristen of Minima Organizing to guide us in digital minimalism. While I have generally embraced minimalism or consider myself minimalist-ish in our home space and my closet - when it comes to my digital life I have to admit I am a hoarder. A hoarder of photos and files and emails. So when someone recently assumed that I must have a great digital filing system that I could ..read more

While I have generally embraced minimalism or consider myself minimalist-sh in our home space and my closet - when it comes to my digital life I have to admit I am a hoarder. A hoarder of photos and files and emails. So when someone recently assumed that I must have a great digital filing system that I could share with them, I first laughed and thought of who I know who does. I immediately thought of Kristen of Minima Organizing. Former architect, owner of a successful home organizing business and my internet friend from afar. I knew Kristen would have the info we needed and the positive outl ..read more
