I arrived at Beeding just before 10am,to be greeted by Martin Jones and a blustery wind .I had my Wildthing and a Lidl one {far to windy for that).Martin had only his Wildthing. Our first flights where ok, but conditions were  bumpy but with good lift.I found landing a bit of a problem putting it down over the road into the field safely. Just after our first flight Robin G arrived with his Wildthing and his Aztec (An  Alan Head prototype). We all had a few more flights before calling it a day due to feeling cold. Still and enjoyable couple of hours in good company ..read more

I was the first to arrive at the designated flying site. On the slope I found that the actual weather was not as forecast. Using my anemometer it read only 8mph, I was expecting much higher, I know from experience that my SAS Wildthing needs at least 12mph to fly. I attempted several explorative flights only to have my original thoughts of my 12mph plus limit confirmed as the lift was marginal at best.  So I decided to take a seat and enjoy not only the view but also the solitude and to contemplate the return of those Spring / Summer days as I could hear the Skylarks above. This peace w ..read more

Successful Glider Kit Auction
Slope Soaring Sussex
by

Hi Everyone, Recently one of our members (Arun) gave us 5 glider kits. He wanted the space at home and therefore the kits had to go. We held a committee meeting to discuss what was the best way to sell these kits and decided to hold an auction among the club members. Each lot was described to the members beforehand via an email so that everyone knew what they were bidding for.                                                             &nbs ..read more

An Excellent Morning at Itford Hill
Slope Soaring Sussex
by

The actual weather was not as forecast, there was very little wind from the West. However, a club member already at Itford confirmed that it was just about flyable. On the way up to the top I heard and spotted my first Skylark of the year. Spring is only just around the corner. Looking West Upon getting to the top and having a few flights it could only be considered as marginal flying conditions. There was some lift but also a lot of sink, especially to the south of the slope. As the morning progressed the sun eventually came out and blue skies appeared and thankfully the wind strengt ..read more

A Chilly and Dull Morning at Devil’s Dyke
Slope Soaring Sussex
by

As you can see from the photograph below the metrological conditions this morning were not great but the flying was awesome with good lift.  Devil's Dyke Club members on the slope this morning were Martin J, Paul H and myself. Martin had brought along his Wildthing while Paul had a modified Lidl chuck glider and a very neat little Dammit S. Today saw the maiden flight of his converted Lidl glider and to be fair it flew very well, after some minor trimming. Martin enjoyed the day flying his Wildthing but commented that it was a bit cold which I had to agree with him.  Howev ..read more

I arrived at the the bottom around about 9am,to find Martin J had just arrived too.    So we started the walk up " seems quicker when in company". I had brought along my Wildthing and my just finished  Starlet to test/try out,Martin J had his Wildthing 46  and 60 and his Aggressor but chose to try the Wildthing 60  and Aggressor.       When we got to the top there was plenty of wind for my Wildthing but Martin J struggled with his Wildthing 60,he later walked down and got his Wildthing 60 which was much better. Around about 10ish Mark arrived with his Wi ..read more

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our club members and our wider audience a very Happy New Year. As the Club has now completed its renewal process for 2023 a small number have decided not to rejoin this year. I can confirm we now have a total of 40 members including 39 seniors and 1 junior member. The Club is in a healthy position and is looking forward to a great flying season. We will be encouraging our members to take their “A” certificates this year and holding practice sessions to improve our landings, which can be problematic for some members, including me. I have been su ..read more

WingBAT 48
Slope Soaring Sussex

Typical November weather outside today so it's time retreat to the workshop and work on my fifth glider model from the Stan Yeo stable. Another 48" flying wing, but of traditional balsa and spruce construction instead of the usual EPP foam. I modified the all-sheet wing construction slightly, cutting 'windows' to reveal the ribs and adding rigidity with spruce spars in place of the 6mm sq. balsa spacers. Stan accidently sent me the wing plan from the WingBAT 48E electric version with wing-mounted servos, which looked intriguingly 'normal' for a flying wing design. I called Stan and wondered w ..read more

Last Chance for the North Easterly, 1st September 2022

I have not been able to come on the recent club outings to the South Downs, but I didn't want to miss the chance to fly in the warm dry NE wind while it lasted (there were heavy showers later). So I packed the car and drove two miles to the bottom of Wolstonbury Hill then proceeded to climb up to my favourite spot. The forecast predicted wind speeds of about 13mph with gusts over 20mph - a bit too blustery for my liking. But having made the effort to get there, and allowing myself 10 minutes to catch my breath, I had to give it a go. There followed numerous five-minute sorties of adrena ..read more

Great Morning at Itford Hill 19 Aug 22
Slope Soaring Sussex

Hi Everyone, This morning we decided to meet at Itford Hill. The forecast was for Westerly wind but on arrival it appeared to be WSW , however it still created great lift. I met George K and Martin J at the car park and we walked up together. Later we were joined by Robin S, Mark J, Gordon S, Bob C, David K and Paul H so it was a great turnout. The lift wasn't always working and when it did work it was slightly to the South but the Wildthings went well at times and not at others. There was a total of 6 Wildthings today and at times they were all airborn together which makes a great sig ..read more
